In seven years full time cruising, I've never met anyone cruising on a cat who wished they were on a mono.

Generally I whole heartedly agree with you but we did meet a couple this year that had just sold their 44 foot cat and bought a 60 foot mono, so although very rare it does happen

Thanks Mariano for the Feeling 55. Never heard of it, but interesting looking. Will study. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. Any others certainly appreciated. I think you'll see more boat mfg trying to create a mono hybrid type boat for people who like to sail on a mono, but like the comfort and openness of a cat. Mono sales are falling and cats are rising. That means mono mfg will have to do something to "stay afloat". Thanks again.

Of course. But in a way that reinforces my point. If you did own a cat and we're unhappy, in the current market It's generally very easy to sell a cat and buy a mono.

Hi all,
"Long time listener first time caller". This thread prompted me to register - I saw exactly that boat in a marina a while back...... I would definitely call it a mono that's cat like!! (I reckon the name gives it away)

Don't let your experience on a charter cat in the BVI's form your opinion on how a catamaran sails. There are other catamarans outside the big 3 charter manufacturers.

My two cents and experience is you may want to look at 40-50' beamy performance cruisers with a deep draft. I can relate to your wife. I have found that beam plus deep draft helps a lot with sailing flat (stability). The performance is key also in this equation. So that means you also need a lighter boat (such as medium displacement). This way you don't need a ton of canvas to still make 5-6kts. For example, on Hooked we often go out with just the jib or just a double reefed main and still maintain over 5/6kts. We have maintained over 8 upwind with a deck sweeper. She is 13.3'B with 7.5'D on a 42.3' loa at 18,000lbs (half is ballast).

I used to race, (dinghies and 33-50') often in heavy wx (SF Bay).
Beam to length ratio is a big factor in stability, much like a cat.

My good friend Peter on his Lagoon 450 wishes he was back on his Tayana 52 or a 60ft Oyster. Most of the time over the past 15 years, he single hands his boat and the Lagoon is too much for him alone when anchoring or docking. He also refuses to cross the Atlantic on it.

We like his Lagoon, it's a tough decision for him. If he stays in the Med, he plans to keep the Lagoon, but will sell prior to exiting.
