Midships ladder
Does anyone have personal experience with a boarding ladder that:
• is rigid; want something better than a rope ladder
• can be permanently mounted amidships
• will fold up out of the way (against lifeline?), but can be pulled down by a person in the water (leave pull rope attached?)
thanks

Re: Midships ladder
My ladder does fold up against the lifelines and I could leave it in place, though I usually don't. It mounts to my genoa track, and I want the extra track that the ladder takes up to better trim my genoa when hard on the wind.

Tops-in Quality, St. Mary's, Michigan used to make a Beauty. I think they sold out to White Water Marine, or something like that.

Re: Midships ladder
I see no particular reason why the various telescoping stern ladders couldn't be adapted to midships use.

We have a midships ladder that attaches to the track and the lifelines. We mostly trim the foresail on an inner track so we leave the ladder in position permanently. It could be set up to be pulled down from the water though we didn't do that. We have a stern ladder which is better for climbing out of the water. We use the side ladder for getting in and out of the dinghy. It works well for that purpose. Downside is that it uses the portside gate. If we tie up to a dock on that side it's a bit of a PITA to arrange the ladder so the gate is useable.

Re: Midships ladder
Mystic Metals makes one that stays on the genny track but we put it well ahead of where we sheet the genny. It would only take a slip knot to make it droppable from the water, which I plan to set up as soon as we are back on the boat.

Mystic Stainless makes the same type of ladder( Mystic, Ct) . I have a slotted toe rail that Tops in Quality made the ladder for that works fine.. Tim

Ours is the Mystic stainless stowaway ladder - they are beautifully made. Ours is at least 15 years old and we never had any problems with it. (they're pricey though, but you'll never need another ladder.).

Re: Midships ladder
I've had a Mystic ladder on two boats. It is excellent, but they don't have an easy way to release it if you're in the water.
Nautilus Marine Fabrication in Trenton Maine has made custom ladders, much the same, with a release fitting that you can reach from the water. Check their website, and look at the "projects" photos. (the intro will run on for a bit, without letting you skip it.)

Jim - here's the link: MYSTIC STAINLESS & ALUMINUM : THE FOLDAWAY
Keep some hankies handy when you read the price list, but like I said they're great ladders. You'll never need another.

Re: Midships ladder
Valiant offered a neat ladder on the 42:
Hard to see on the photo, but it swings on a pivot on the gate stanchion. Most owners rigged it with a snap shackle holding it up and stowed and lanyard hanging down so that pulling on the lanyard releases the ladder and it swings down.
Here's a close-up of the pivot. I'm not including it inline because the photo is huge:

Re: Midships ladder
We had one custom made for our Pearson 28 by a local welder in Cortez, FL. It was pricey, but awesome.
