Maidentrip - Laura Dekker

I just watched this documentary off of amazon last night. Has anyone else seen this? I was following this story closely when it happened, and it was great to see it documented in a movie.

I'm just wondering what anyone thought of it?

Re: Maidentrip - Laura Dekker

The movie was good but her book filled in a lot of gaps.

I'd hazard a guess that many have seen it.
Personally, I thought it pretty well done, but of course I'm sure opinions vary

Re: Maidentrip - Laura Dekker

I thought the documentary was very well done, for sure. But my husband and I talked about it, and we couldn't decide if this girl was OVERLY responsible... or completely escaping responsibility.

I also found it interesting that at the beginning of her journey, she said how she wanted to see so many places, and cultures. And yet, in the movie, it showed her only really stopping a few times. I think I counted 4 stops.. and then the rest of the time she was on the ocean. She also said that she preferred the ocean passages. So, I thought that was interesting as well.

I applaud her love of sailing... but I wonder about her love of isolation...

Saw it, Liked it. Wasn't too worried about her. Seems she was pretty mature for her age.

I only saw it a couple of months ago and really liked it. Laura herself dislikes it apparently. But I think it gives her a hell of a lot of credit.

I work in child services and I remember when the court cases were occuring we were all quite horrified that their welfare system would get involved in something like that. From a professional perspective we all thought it was purely a parent decision and responsibility.

I'm waiting to see the Abby Sunderland story movie. I've read the book but can't seem to get it for down load in Australia.

We saw the movie and I can only say that we all could use some of that determinism and courage at such an early age. If we had more young people like that pursuing their dreams, in whatever field, indeed this would be a better world for it.

If you stream NetFlix, Maiden Trip is available.

Netflix also has Wild Eyes, the Abby Sunderland story. What a contrast between the two girls! Abby is always looking totally stressed out and on the satphone to her parents, while Laura looks like she is having fun.

Loved the movie.. Not sure how I feel about a girl that young out on her own. I definitely respect her, but would love to hear her thoughts in 20 years.

The crew aboard S/V Fluenta just met her in New Zealand (where she lives on her boat).

She just seemed mature beyond her years to me. So many people these days have a fear or an aversion to being on their own. Seems to me the vast majority of human interactions are at least partially about avoiding really looking at one's self. I would venture that it takes a lot of time alone to be capable of being authentic in one's interactions with others. Anyway, by the end of the movie she seemed ready for a little company and had a friend along. What is it you wonder about her comfort with being alone?

I very much enjoyed the film and appreciated Laura's extraordinarily positive attitude. I was also struck that she almost seemed the happiest when the wind was howling. I liked her comment "No one said sailing was going to be fun -- except me."

Re: Laura's unusual comfort with isolation, this was an article in the local paper earlier this year -- People prefer electric shocks to time alone with their thoughts - Science - The Boston Globe. It boggles the mind, but the data are the data.

That might have something to do with her mindset. When she was sailing her smaller sailboat (the Hurly 700) she would always go out when conditions were howling to see what her boat could do. We she got into racing in the youth programs, she won. When sailing on her big boat Guppy and buddy boating to the next anchorage with other cruisers, she took a certain delight in arriving 1st against faster boats. I've always thought she had a sixth sense about sailing, how hard she could push without breaking.
