Luxury Items

i'm mentioning this cos i was in the yacht club earlier and people were talking about the latest interior fashions and stuff and some really kind person that i sharnt name on here said that it would be pointless asking me for my opinion !!!!! said person has been inside my boat

so luxury items - maybe its the latest galley or heads that you've had installed cos your other half / sailing partner said that it would make all the difference even though costs say otherwise

my luxury items for this year were

a FULL set of Raymarine wireless electronics and cockpit / mast up displays plus a 4kw raydome an AIS 650 (replaced my old AIS setup) plus the new fangled RayTech Sailracer software for my iPad plus a bracket for said iPad that fits where the bottom washboard goes

my boat also carries a 12" plotter / a separate 12" radar both of these show the readings from the newly installed AIS 650

now these to me are luxury items i don't know too many boats with full comprehensive electronic set ups - most have a tridata plus a gps and maybe an electronic compass too

what are your luxuries ?????

Re: luxury items

New AC, old one was about gone
AC in front Stateroom as if you closed the door, it got hot up there.
Fresh water flush
Cockpit shower (hot and cold)
Satellite TV, added last weekend, I know many will roll their eyes, but we watch too much TV and I want to be weaned off it, not go cold turkey. I'm trying to make the transition easy
Davits and big / dry dinghy with big motor
Autopilot
Generator
Ice box conversion to refrigeration / freezer

I see Radar, plotter, AIS as Safety equipment, but that autopilot was pure luxury

Re: luxury items

A new evaporator for our reefer. I had forgotten what a season in the tropics without cold beer and wine, food etc. was like. Definitely a luxury.

It's uncivilized to go cruising without an ice maker

Well marketed but disgusting mustard which belongs only on hot dog type food.
Gracious living demands well-formed ice in chilled crystal for cruising.

Haha! Funny you should say that! One day, a couple of summers ago, a Cabo 34 came near us while we were out for a day sail and asked...

"Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?". It was pretty funny at the time. Later while we were all hauled for winter, this guy walked by our boat and I actually tossed him a jar of Grey Poupon. We all got a big laugh from that.

Perhaps, Cabo folks drive Jaguars and have loads of class.

Re: luxury items

the AIS system some of you count as safety kit - cos of the cost of it - where i live it's a luxury item

my boat is totally stripped out - if i put a fridge in there then would be just plain showing off.

i did put black perspex windows in a few years back and my hammock got updated but there's none of this refined stuff that you're all going on about cos that would mean me having to reinstall the interior of my boat to accomodate and that just plain weighs too much my boat is a sled and a sail locker

the only real luxury that i forgot to mention is the dehumidifier what an inspired decision that was - if you get wet then you can guarantee to dry out not just your clothes but also the boat plus all the kit that's in it plus if you run it through winter too it'll keep your boat at around 13degrees C plenty warm anough even in winter

Re: luxury items

Raritan PHII head replaced the no longer made W/C Headmate.

No worries anymore.

All the rest is maintenance of stuff that came with the boat except for our HH Garmin GPSMap 76Cx, what I call "just a small chartplotter."

If I sailed in fog I'd get AIS and radar, but I don't.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"
