Yes.

I think for every one we hear about there will be a number, maybe 2 or 3, that we never hear about.

Many want to sail in ignorance of the actual number of boats damaged or lost.

We tend to look for a confirmation that it can be done rather than for information that it cannot. If you are looking for something, you are likely to find just that. Ask any keen scientist. It is a common bias, and a thinking trap.

But serious boat accidents are far more common than many cruisers assume.

Yesterday we learned that our long time, good friend and an experienced sailor lost his boat. How many of us will ever hear of this? Not many, unless one walks an Australian beach hundreds of miles North from Cooktown.
