You may want to also consider an S2 9.2., perhaps not a sailboat you'd want to cross the ocean with, but a super great sailboat for coastal cruising and small hops down to the Caribbean.
We comfortably cruised the rugged west coast of BC for 15 years in our centre cockpit, S2 9.2. She was sturdy and comfortable for us and visiting family/friends. Often, we could tuck in close to islands, when other boats had to anchor out farther. Just another benefit.
I have a friend that bought the aft cockpit model and cruised/lived on the boat while checking out the Bahamas and the Caribbean, solo for 5 years. He thought the size was perfect, for one or two people living the lifestyle and keeping costs reasonable.

and remember, when you are buying a boat you are buying an engine. May seem strange to say that about a sailboat, but nothing can do more to lower the value of a boat than an inboard that is old, worn out or doesn't work.

I see this is one of your first posts and you are new to CF.

Since you have about a year during which you can research boats, I suggest you do the following:

Subscribe to the thread that is focused on different boat types and noteworthy finds that are currently for sale at prices less than $30K. This thread is a long term discussion thread on multiple brands and types and sizes of boats that are commonly seen on the used market and often recommended. 2. I am sure you will get answers to your questions in this thread, along with suggestions of some boats. Another good thing to do is to read back in the archives of the forum to find similar threads asking for "which boat" and look at more suggestions.

3. If you are looking for a "cruising" boat, there are several sites that list the commonly suggested brands and models of boats that were popular (mostly in the USA) and built mostly in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of these may be found in your area and some may be on the used market within your budget. Here are a few sites that list many boats and/or describe them.

Totally doable, we just purchased a Bristol 29.9 for an amiable price. You will have to do all the usual maintainence on an older boat (rebeding etc) but that is the nature of the beast as it were. Good luck on your boat hunting.
