Re: Looking for advice

Maybe, Mr. grumpy and sarcastic, it would benefit you to step back a bit. Essentially, you are asking the forum to recommend you a good boat for a limited sum--by the way, I'd figure it at 50% - 50%, not as Steady Hand did. You're about to learn a lot about boat maintenance.

Do you really want this to be a committee decision?

Of course you don't. Go out there, look at boats, see what makes your heart go pitty-pat, and then come back with something like "I like this and this and this: what are their faults?" and then wait for the answers. If people are long time cruisers, they probably only "play CF" limited times of the day, if at all.

Re: Looking for advice

I like my beneteau 343 but it is too small for a live aboard. I'd look for a little larger boat.

Also keep the n mind that prices tend to be soft. Look for 15% bargaining room or more.

We can recommend a lot of boats but we need to know more about your preferences. First though, why "under 10 years old?" I am guessing that you are assuming younger is better, but in sailboats that is not necessarily so. Bluewaterboats.org has a lot of tried and true cruising boats, and the list is always being updated. It is one place to start. Atomvoyages.com has some good advice and a good list of boats though they may be a on the small side for you. Mahina.com is also a good resource. It is a good rule of thumb that you should spend half on the purchase and half on refitting. In your case, what about your cruising cash? Will you have some kind of income? Mahina also mentions that there is a better supply of cruise-ready "bluewater" boats in the northeast, so shopping there may be smarter and plan to sail it down to the Caribbean. I can certainly understand a desire to ditch it all and sail away, and I am sure we'd all like to help you do it successfully and safely. The more info you can give, the better our advice will be.

Re: Looking for advice

Perhaps you're looking in the wrong direction. You live in an area where boating particularly Sailing is very popular and the places within which to go are countless. In fact, if it were not such a long trip ( from the South you must motor up the West Coast or sail to Hawaii to get to Vancouver Canada) many sailers would make your area a top destination!. There are many good boats available that can teach you to sail in your area. You can maintain your home in Vancouver and take lessons, Charter or sail a smaller boat you purchased on weekends.
Stay home, experiment. Sail, enjoy what the Islands have to offer. In doing so you will have a much better idea of what you'd like to do and certainly which type of boat you prefer.
Our Peterson 46 is in Maple Bay on Vancouver Island.....we are from Cali and have decided to keep her there one more year before setting course South to Chile.
Good Luck!

Oops, should have kept those tools if you plan to buy a boat. ;-)

Re: Looking for advice

Okay, here's what I did, like shopping for boats its fun, even for a complete stranger.

I went to yacht world and created a search using your parameters. I entered sail, 35-40 ft, 2005-2014, state of Florida. I got 3 hits, that's not a good sign, Florida is a good place to shop for boats, there are a lot of them there.

There was a 2005 Beneteau 39 for $99k usd, with no cruising upgrades or electronics and I'm guessing some deferred maintenance.

A 2007 37' Bavaria for $89500 usd, no cruising upgrades and I'm guessing some deferred maintenance.

There was a 2006 Hunter 36 $89000 USD. She did have some upgrades, most notably a generator.

I'm sure as long as they weren't too badly abused by their previous owners any one would fit your bill as long as you're willing to spend some money on upgrading equipment and do some projects to compensate for the deferred maintenance.

Re: Looking for advice

Take a look at the Boat Classifieds on this very Forum
Quick look found a few that would work for you
1986 Catalina 34' 44,000.00 Mid range
Benne 36' 89,500.00 High
Wasquiez. 38' 39,000 Euros Mid range
Island Packet 31. 50,000.00 Mid range
Then there is a Catalina 30 in need of repowering for 10,000.00
No need to reinvent the wheel
The Catalina 34' comes fairly well equipped and would leave you
plenty of money in the kitty
I have no connection with any of the above boats at all
If you don't know how to sail, Don't let it stop you BUT
I'd head over to the UK and take some courses with the RYA
At least to the point of Day Skipper/Tidal
I recently completed Coastal Skipper at the Shearwater Sailing School
And the instructors were fantastic

Buy the Boatsafe.com coastal navigation course
Learn lights and collregs ( not to hard but study is required)
My Admiral retires in four years then were off
Don't let the gruffs here scare you off, they all mean well
and have really helped me refine my own plans for when my
Admiral retires and we cast off
(A long 4 years away) but am using that time to learn,
Sail my daysailer, and crew on other boats
It's all doable

If he's in Vancouver, no need to head to UK to learn anything about boating. Vancouver has great both recreation and commercial navigation/seamanship schools.

I did my Watchkeeping Mate in Vancouver at the Pacific Marine Training Institute, but no need to go that down that route, contact Sail Canada or the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, in a 20 or 40 hour course, either one would give the op a basic undetstanding of safe navigation.

We each see things differently.

What follows is written in a friendly tone of voice, but I don't agree with you.

I read Ann's comments several times.

I do not see them as "rude" nor as "ridicule" as you see them.

I see them as very practical and wise and kind advice. The kind I would hope to get from an experienced cruiser, which she is.

I even agree with her disagreement with my earlier statement. I suggested the OP tell the Buyer's Broker he has $50K burning a hole in his pocket. I then suggested he keep a minimum of $10K for the inevitable fixes that the survey would find. Ann countered that with the 50/50. I agree. It would be smarter to have $50K set aside for repairs and refit.

No, I don't see her comments as rude. I see them as wise.

Re: Looking for advice

I have chartered with Moorings 5 times in the past 10 years. I have always found their boats to be maintained well at their Tortola base. (Sailed them in Greece and St. Lucia/Grenadines as well). At least with a Moorings boat, there would be a clear record of maintenance, and the surprises should be minimal. Also, the Moorings boats will be in the 5 year old range, and that region of the Caribbean is a relatively easy sailing area. If not there, go to the Chesapeake bay in the US. Rock hall or annapolis Maryland are good starting points. Also, Oriental and New Bern, North Carolina. There are boats everywhere for sale in all of these locations.

Ben
