Looking for a surveyor for Island Packet Yachts

So here is the deal:
I have been sailing for about 7 or 8 years. I owned a 32 foot Hunter 326, averaged 45+ days a year out of our slip. Motor sailed from Corpus Christi to Tampa (31 days living aboard with my wife), and at the end of the trip we decided that a bigger boat and a longer trip were in order. As a result I am back at work for a few more years. At the end of this, I will fully retire and we will be in the market for a bigger boat.

Based on all of my research, and walking on boats and sailing with friends and going to boat shows etc. I have narrowed the search down to an Island Packet. This is not about which brand of boat is best, they are all a compromise, and in our case this is what works for us.

Long story to get where I am going, I will need a surveyor who knows Island Packets, is willing to travel (the boats that I am looking at are rarely near each other). I expect to narrow the search down to 2 or maybe 3 boats, then get surveys on the most likely and deal with that boat. Obviously I am starting my search for the surveyor before I actually start the search for the boat.

I know that it will cost some $$$ to get a survey from a good surveyor when he/she has to travel some distance, but if the surveyor is good/great at what they do and actually are familiar with the Island Packets it should be worth what I am willing to pay.

Send me a PM. May take awhile to reply as its Christmas. I don't want to put emails and telephone numbers in public as there are bots that harvest those.
Anyway guy I used was the shop supervisor for IP for a few years and knew the boat inside and out and knew where to look.
He is not an engine surveyor, but checked more than I expected and again knew what to look for.
He was exceedingly thorough, my survey was 70 pages and extremely well prepared, you will end up with more flaws than you will expect and his valuation is very close to actual selling prices.
I know he will travel some as he drove across Fl for me, and was very reasonable on mileage and per diem

Hi nes,
You might also try either of the two IP (Island Packet) forums.

IP Home Port - The Official Website For Island Packet Yacht Owners Since 1998

Official Island Packet Yacht Owners Association - Welcome to Island Packet Yacht Owners Assoc, The REAL Official Website For Island Packet Yacht Owners

Both require you to join, to post. But if you do buy an IP, both are valuable resources.

IP's are great boats!
I own two of them.

Long time cruiser, zeehag, recommends Kjell Christiansen, in San Diego, I believe. It is not that he particularly specializes in IPs, but that he is knowledgeable and honest! It is reported that he will travel, but you'd have to negotiate the particulars of that.

Any competent marine surveyor of small crafts can do a good survey. There is nothing special about an IP that would require unique knowledge.

Re: Looking for a surveyor for Island Packet Yachts

Before you fly out your surveyor of trust you could have a local surveyor give an in water cursory look for 2 or 3 hundred dollars.
I have done this in the past and saved a bundle. Advertisements especially photos can be quite deceptive.

I sense some thread drift, but there's also an IP 420 for sale in San Diego with only 240 hours on it.

Re: Looking for a surveyor for Island Packet Yachts

Rick Shelley did an awesome job surveying my IP as well as I have heard many others recommend him. there was not an inch of that boat he didn't know. RD Shelley Marine Surveyor is the way to reach him.
