Look Bucket

I was rummaging around my store room and came across my venerable "look bucket"

I first saw one of these when I went fishing with an old timer Bahamian fisherman. He never got his feet feet wet...ever. He'd place a fish trap, with some bait, in the water, some 30' deep, come back the next day to his " secret" spot that he found by aligning various landmarks.

Then he'd place the " look bucket" in the water alongside his skiff, so he could see the bottom, to find his fish trap. Once found, he'd lower a line with a small grapnel hook and bring up the trap, usually containing a few grouper.

I have quite a few photo's of this operation, but I was mesmerized by the "look bucket" and first thing I did when I got back, was to find me a 5 gallon bucket, cut the bottom out and glue in a clear plastic bottom with some 5200.

What a fantastic device. I liked to use it for diving. I'd poke my head into it and lean over the bow while someone else was driving the dink. I could see forever, and would search out prospective dive sites before I'd even got in the water.

I also used it to check my anchor set.

No sailor should be without one of these.

Re: Look Bucket

Bet it would work as a regular bucket too. Maybe someone should manufacture them. To use on boats with more freeboard maybe a "look pipe" would work similarly. You need clear water though...

Re: Look Bucket

I have seen some that are manufactured by some or other company...it's a blow up version, but It's nowhere near as good or practical, and yes, on top of everything else, it does still function as a bucket.

This thing was quite handy. I could spot a lobster antenna sticking out of a crevice in water 20' deep and down I'd go.

Bahamian sponge fishermen also use these. Never leave the boat, Find what they are looking for and they gig it up.

Re: Look Bucket

These were everywhere in the 1960s. Seem to have fallen out of popularity.

Re: Look Bucket

There are heaps on Google: https://www.google.com/search?q=Unde...&bih=625&dpr=1

A couple of our guests bought us two of them. They worked well, and people who don't want to risk stingers and stuff can then at least see the underwater world. The caulking needed to be replaced (if you wanted to use the bucket for bailing) after 2 years, but that's easy.

Re: Look Bucket

dang...I shoulda marketed mine

I know that a lot of sailors don't dive, but it is certainly a useful gadget for checking the anchor.

If one is not near a Walmart, or other such shop, it is easy enuff to fabricate. 5 gallon buckets are to be found in abundance most anywhere. Clear acrylic can also be sourced from a variety of places, and what sailor doesn't keep a tube of 5200 handy.

I don't think I have but $3 invested in mine.
