Like sleeping inside a congo drum

I spent the night in the aft cabin of a 2015 Beneteau Oceanis 37 and was surprised how noisy it was all night.

I think the swell/wave slap against the aft bottom/swim step was echoing through the boat...

Is this common and/or avoidable?

That’s the nature of thin hulls... one of the major reasons we went for an older thicker hull design. Our boat is not only quiet at anchor in most conditions but also cruising at 6 knots. Not even a squeak.

Many boats ,including my Catalina 470 get that slap. It depends on the Anchorage. Mostly it's ok,sometimes its terrible, you adapt and get used to it. No perfect boat.

I heard someone once tied a line through a pool noodle or two and tied them under the stern counter and it worked.

It's not a boat weight issue, it's a hull shape and anchorage combination. My westerly oceanlord was terrible for it, one reason I don't like aft cabin boats.

If you look at the side view of the stern profile if there is any overhang above water you would get that slap for sure. Same slap leaving the dinghy tethered. Ask me how I know.

Re: Like sleeping inside a congo drum

Had some friends with really flat sections aft and a sugar scoop, and they tied a fender under the stern to quiet it.

Ours is a similar shape, but we sleep forward, and are used to the slap, we know what it is and don't become alarmed.

that noise you hear is your anchor alarm,if it stops or changes it probably means that the boat is dragging!

Lots of boats have ass slap. I bet all that have a sugar scoop type aft that isn't always in the water have it.

I’m not sure I understand the problem?
Don’t your guests sleep in the aft cabin(s).....

Re: Like sleeping inside a congo drum

It's common in every boat I've been on if the swell comes from astern. Not many boats don't have that overhang.

There was also some kind of boat diaper for this. When at a marina, I use ear plugs. Usually not bad at anchor since the bow is to the wind.

Re: Like sleeping inside a congo drum

Thanks Everyone,

All good info.

Just some more details for those who asked questions...

It was a charter, I am 6'2" so too tall to comfortably sleep in that boat's V-berth, plus I wanted my guests to be comfortable so I gave them the v-berth. That night was a spring tide with a 4+ Knot ebb into the wind & swell so it was ass-slap all night long. The anchorage I was in to view the 4th of July fireworks was really crowded so I couldn't put out a Bahamian Moor to prevent from swinging.

All in all though, a great learning experience. As I charter more boats under different conditions, I should get a better idea of what the right boat is for me to buy when I shove off for long term cruising.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas...

Thanks!

Unfortunately, your boat isn't the only one with this problem. it seems to come from the aft sugarscoop transom shape and I've had nights of fitful sleep (despite having earplugs next to the bed for just such nights and being a heavy sleeper) because of it. Some people have tried swimming noodles tied around the aft section with mixed success.
