LeComte NE 38 stories of ocean voyages / circumnavigations?

Hello sy-ina. Beautiful restoration work! How did you take off the coamings? My wood need reconditioning (I let it go, so now need to strip down completely and redo varnish entirely, plus probably be easier to do it in a shop than on the boat, it’s below freezing now out here).
Also: looks like you added a rubrail, they weren’t built that way. Do you have photos and descriptions of that work?
Thank you!
Anton

Re: LeComte NE 38 stories of ocean voyages / circumnavigations?

I build them completely new because they have bin as soft that i could easyly put a screwdriver through it. so i took out the old one with a chisel.
for the new one i build a mould out of plywood with the original curves and than i bonded several layer of thin gabun boatbuilding plywood by the use of vacuum technic and epoxy into the mould. After shaping the oversized part i put 2,5mm Teak above it all ( by vacuum)and mounted the winchboard. then i coated it with epifanes oil paint and glued it with sikaflex 291 and a lot of stainless screws back into place.

I think taking the coaming out without breaking it is impossibel. And painting outside is not easy these days, i would recommend you to wait until its warmer.

Maybe the moulds still exists in my old boatyard...

SV-INA,

Great to hear from you and congratulations on completing your restoration of the LeComte NE 38. It looks like you have done a fantastic job and did you have to do a lot of interior woodwork repair / overhead ceiling repair or replacements?

I would be interested to see some other photos of your interior projects and so glad you are now out sailing and exploring. These are wonderful boats and keep us informed as to your voyage and destinations.

Thank you again and best wishes,
