I agree with this, but I am still struggling to think where I can mount any additional tanks. We have small tanks (60 gallons of water, 35 gallons of fuel). It is the one downside to my boat. I hate the idea of jerry cans on deck, but where to put additional tanks? You can just put them anywhere either - there is room in the transom but that would really affect the handling of the boat. Perhaps we should just accept to be a sailing vessel and use fuel as little as possible on crossings.

Re: Jerrycan storage one deck?

I always swore I'd never do this. But in SE Asia I had to - no wind!! HUGE engine hours. 10 Jerrycans on deck. Motored 1300 NM once!! Board and strap method. I would NOT do this in the high latitudes - a wave would take out the stanchions. ...

Re: Jerrycan storage one deck?

I cruised an older C&C 36 offshore for a couple of years, years ago and I had 25 gallons of fuel and 35 gallons of water, no watermaker in those days. We had the gas Atomic 4 engine and it burned close to a gallon an hour. The beauty of your boat and the C&C is that they sail well in light air if not overloaded. We sailed everywhere and if there was no wind we simply sat and waited. Not so popular these days to sit and wait but who's in a big hurry on a sailboat to begin with? When cruising boats come equiped with 120 gallon tanks you can be pretty sure they sail like dog's in light air.

Re: Jerrycan Storage on Deck?

I have a 34 Oday now and sail her everywhere I can. I only have 5 cans to deal with but I really do like a clear deck. A bladder may be the answer for water but I think I'll. keep the fuel for dink and boat in cans. So really only have to store 3.

Re: Jerrycan Storage on Deck?

Yes, you need jerry cans to get water and fuel to the boat - fact of life in out of the way places.

However, tying them to the stanchions is bad news. The day you run into the "big" storm, they are going over the side - and you may possibly damage/hole the deck as well. I have friends that this as happened to - very scary.

On my boat I made a removable mini-deck out of 1/4" aluminum between the seats in the cockpit and store the 4 diesel jerry jugs under it. The jugs are secured in place, you can still stretch out or walk around in the cockpit without tripping over them and they are protected from the sun/elements.

Another thought is to carry a light air chute. We have a 3/4oz spinnaker we use as a cruising chute for really light airs and on one passage from PR back to North Carolina we flew the chute for 5-days/24-hrs a day. Wind was 1 to 3-knots and we made 2 to 4-kts boat speed (the Gulf Stream gave us a knot).

The nicest, quietest, drama free passage we ever made!

Re: Jerrycan Storage on Deck?

In 2000 on an Maui Victoria trip we had several jerry cans lashed to the boards on the stanchions. We were broad reaching in 30 knots gusting 35. Even with one slam, nothing came loose, no stanchions were damaged.

In both 2010 and 2012 returns we had the set up shown in the earlier video. The only concern was the owner claiming I was bringing back enough lumber for his renovation.

35 knots downwind is not heavy weather....

Agreed, but a slam in 12-15 seas did not dislodge a single jerry can.

Hand steering a broad reach in those conditions was a heck of lot of work.

Jack, it may have worked for you in that instance, but many of us have seen with own eyes damaged decks and missing stanchions resulting from wave strikes and jerry can arrays on deck.

I won't do it myself, nor advise others to do so (lash them to stanchions/lifelines).

That's always been my concern. Rebeding stanchions simply from idiot teenage "dockhands" (dickheads) is bad enough.

Re: Jerrycan Storage on Deck?

I am working on a new cat dinghy design, one that disassembles for a passage.
The interesting thing is that the narrow hulls can also do double duty as 'jerry cans', to store extra fuel or water, that will be empty by the time you arrive and ready to use it as dinghy again.
Seems like a good idea?

It was a fine passage, great winds and you haven't used much diesel. Now you need to use the dinghy, but you realise it is full of fuel. Now what?

I can think of about 4-5 things to do next. What would you do?

One question for those with jerry cans, where do you store them after a passage?

For me that's simple, either pour them in the fuel tanks or take'm and put in the truck. The empties go in storage.
