Jabsco engine cooling pump repairable?

Hi. One of the half moons that connects to the perkins 4108 broke off. Is this part fixable or can I replace it without having to buy a new pump. The pump still works perfectly.

Don't know, but call Depco Pump in Clearwater, Florida 727-446-1656
They should be able to tell from pictures and when I needed help
replacing my water pump they did not try to oversell me.

Re: Jabsco engine cooling pump repairable?

Looking at the photo I was suprised to see very little wear on the slot. Any idea what caused the failure? Regarding repair if the housing is good, there's no problem ordering and replacing the shaft. Don't forget the seals.

The part can be replaced. You need a new shaft, seals and bearings. My guess is that this will cost about the same as a new pump but don't accept that until you get quotations from suppliers. Agree that Depco Pump is a good place to start. But there are other places you can find these parts. The seals and bearings are standard.

First step is to remove the shaft, then the bearings and seals. This may require a press. Any machine shop will have the press needed to remove and replace the parts. If no press then see this web site for some "tricks" to getting around that.

Re: Jabsco engine cooling pump repairable?

The coupling itself is replaceable, p/n is 3278-0000. It is widely available, in the US for about 70.00.

If you're fairly proficient with tools, you may be able to replace the coupling without totally disassembling the pump. If the pump is working fine already there is no absolute need to replace any bearings or seals or anything else. I guess the logic is, 'since its off rebuild it'. I prefer to fix things that need fixing.

Guess it's kinda like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped, but be careful reinstalling the pump when you get it fixed...

Re: Jabsco engine cooling pump repairable?

The reason I mentoned replacing the seals is that they are the cheapest part to replace and they do break down, especially the one behind the impeller. Also if there is a burr on the broken shaft it might damage a seal as it is pulled through. Fresh seals to seat onto a new shaft. Pressing out the broken shaft is not a major problem, I've have replaced a worn shaft and a few leaking seals on our Jabsco over the years and these are jobs well within the capabilities of a lot of sailors.
