Re: Island suitable navigation gear

Specs for:

Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1, Intel Core i5-4310U 2.0GHz, 8GB, 256GB SSD, 10.1in WUXGA Multi Touch + Digitizer, WiFi, Bluetooth, Webcam, Rear Cam, Windows 10 Pro, 4G LTE, Dedicated GPS (Renewed)

If I did not already have two MFDs this, or a cheaper version, Panasonic Toughpad with OpenCPN is the way I would be going.

Re: Island suitable navigation gear

One more time. Big respect for project.

But as always disgusted with the idea of foruming. All of you have same situation. Boat -> time -> braking something -> repairs / money
By proposing you a solution for free you are so ignorant to look in new possibilities. It's 2023 ! not old times.
If you have to much $$$ do what you doing. Don't create new generation of sailors going that same stupid path!

You can sail, have instrument for close to nothing!

Going path with buying new stuff you are only insuring all around that this is only way !
It's not a good way.

Chart plotter is for charts. Not to display a product!
You need to pay that they will still your data from you and make more money on you ! Chears for that you in rat race!

Re: Island suitable navigation gear

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. Given you particular circumstances an all in one plotter / GPS / AIS would make sense. As long as it can store routes and has reasonable charts, most data for Fiji comes from Captain Cooks notes, no commercial traffic so no incentive to survey.

Consider a budget Plotter / GPS / AIS like Onwa or Matsutec. Accepts CMap and K Charts.

Stand alone depth sounders will also work best one in each hull and will give redundancy in case of failure.
I know your boat is essentially a sailing boat but sailing in Fiji was the first time I "needed" engines, not being able to make your destination while the sun is still high can be a major issue. Having a plotter that can store routes, clearing WP's and back track is essential.
