Thats not the what big boat owners on CF say normally.. bigger is just as easy and the bigger the boat the more it can handle the weather.. Bring it On...

Re: Island Packet: the right boat for remote voyaging?

I have a friend who abandoned his 28 ft boat after 60 sleepless hours of gales off Northern California. He is a professional yacht racer who sailed that boat from Alaska to New Zealand and back. He was trying to get back to California after winning the Single Handed Transpac for the 3rd or 4th time.

Every time I cross that stretch of ocean in other boats, I ask myself what would I do in his situation. He told me that he got off because he was the sole provider for his aging parents, and simply could not afford to lose his life.

A bigger boat can take bigger waves. The accelerations are lower in a bigger boat.

I looked at an IP years ago, and moved on because it didn't have any good sea berths. The ideal sea berth is one you can wedge yourself into, the narrower the better, but you can make one by sleeping with bags of sails.

Like you, I'm actually out here cruising. I also started learning on 20ft, then 30ft and finally 40ft over 10 years.

The OP on this one, if he makes it off the dock, will last a couple months :-). I hope I'm wrong!
