I have a friend who abandoned his 28 ft boat after 60 sleepless hours of gales off Northern
California. He is a professional yacht
racer who sailed that boat from
Alaska to
New Zealand and back. He was trying to get back to
California after winning the
Single Handed Transpac for the 3rd or 4th time.
Every time I cross that stretch of ocean in other
boats, I ask myself what would I do in his situation. He told me that he got off because he was the sole provider for his aging parents, and simply could not afford to lose his life.
A bigger boat can take bigger waves. The accelerations are lower in a bigger boat.
I looked at an IP years ago, and moved on because it didn't have any good sea berths. The ideal sea berth is one you can wedge yourself into, the narrower the better, but you can make one by sleeping with bags of
sails.
