Re: Island Packet 40 vs Tayana 42

Thanks so much everyone for this helpful thread. I am currently considering the following boats:

* IP 40
* Tayana 42 Vancouver
* Valiant 40
* Caliber 40
* Passport 40
* Halberg Rassy 37 to 42 (I love this boat, but don't know if we can afford it)
* Pacific Seacraft 37

We want a sailboat we can both coastal cruise with as well as sail offshore with confidence in the design and construction to handle a gale...

I'd add the Cabo Rico 38 & the Hans Christian 38. A couple of my favorites.

Look at the Mason 44's. I think there are several on the market (without teak decks). Non-cored hull and spectacular teak interiors.

Unlikely it's a 38, last year for a 38 was I believe 93.

Re: Island Packet 40 vs Tayana 42

If you can get a well maintained non-blister Valiant...well that is what I ended up with in 2008 and have never looked back. She's solid in a storm and glides easily across the water in those moonlight breezes. My family loves to sail on her and being a 40 yo boat I love to work on her . No teak decks but lots of teak inside. Everything is accessible except the fuel tank, had to lift the cockpit floor to do that (but it was not as hard as I thought it would be- did the whole thing in two weeks)
In short- does nothing perfect but everything well.
Sorry, she is not for sale.
