Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?

Definitely going to purchase a used boat (soon!) and curious if it is bad luck to change her name. Some old-timers have told me it's a big no-no. Is this really a big deal?

We had nothing but problems when we changed the name of our boat. The proper christening ceremony is mandatory to ensure good luck! Once we did all our problems disappeared! But if you don't believe in all that stuff it's up to you! I think sailors are superstitious by nature.

not always

It does require a certain amount of precaution.. see John Vigor's denaming ritual: 48° Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony

Luck
the force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person's life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities

Hope
the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best

The choice is yours
My boat has had 4 owner's and 3 names

I guess if it wasn't for bad luck there'd be no need for hope.

Renaming a boat is bad luck only if you believe in it.

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum. I know a lot of sailors are superstitious and say never change the boat name, all I can say is I've owened 5 boats and changed the name on 4 with no problems, the one I own now is the only one that I kept the name and I've had a lot of bad things happen. I've even considered changing the name hoping to reverse this. IMHO if you like the name keep it if not then go for it

RENAME YOUR BOAT???? ARE YOU OUTTA YOUR MIND!!!!!?????

Ok, your choice of course. I bought my first big (25 footer) sailboat many years ago. The boat looked in pretty sound shape. During the first sea-trial the outboard quits on the way in to harbor and we nearly smashed her on a breakwater. The second trial, again coming back to the harbor one of the shrouds snaps, fortunately the main was already down, but nearly smashed her again on the same breakwater. Two weeks later a massive storm broke the rudder off while in the slip. A month later, a tropical storm wrecked the boat even more. I payed slip fees for a non-operational boat for the next year, before unloading her at 1/3 the price I bought it.

Yes, I was young and stupid in many ways and could have prevented much of the calamities. But I will never change a boat name ever again....

Hi Jim.
Welcome aboard. I've had five boats and renamed three including my current boat Enchantress. Did the renaming ceremony -- an excuse to drink rum, not that any excuse is needed.
Have not had anything really bad happen on any of the boats

Exactly Boatman, give the poor man bad advice is usual.. (hehehe). When his boat sinks he can blame YOU! All kidding aside, my superior sailing skills (never used a motor until i bought the aforementioned boat, did save her from smashing into the rocks, and wrecking in the harbor while screaming in under sail alone.

And did my bad decisions cause a tropical storm? Nope, I'm positive it was the name change.

Sometimes I think the whole 'Bad Luck to rename' rumor was started by people selling new boats.....

but having said that, I have only changed the name on one, and it's the most troublesome I have ever owned.

It all depends if you believe one action can cause another completely disconnected reaction to occur. Some people find false patterns in truly random events which they attribute to their past behaviors.

It could be fun having a party to celebrate a name change though. There is nothing superstitious about having fun. It's all very real.

I have had my boat for three years and changed the name. Since then I have had the following problems.
1. Car transmission failed.
2. Police came to home to report my dogs running loose.
3. Boat engine starter battery cable needed to be replaced.
4. Earth quake in Haiti.

Bottom line don't do it!!!!!!!!! For goodness sake learn from my mistake!!!!
