With the proper ceremony, notifying Neptune and all, maybe I'll be ok.

Try Cheating a bit.... call it DONGSWIN.... maybe anagrams don't count...... Bet you'll be unique....

how bout spelling errors? "Windsawng". "Wyndesawng" surely Neptune doesn't subtract points for spelling. You've seen how the early mariners spelled.....

If you have any Welsh ancestry then maybe the above, otherwise maybe one of your fore-bearers' languages may be useful.

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
Found this online, as I may have the same dilemma one day- if I'm lucky!
It is quite humorous but whether it has any validity remains to be seen!

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
Just bought a boat and have a similar dilemma, to rename or not to rename! She is called Lover, which I'm not really a fan of. If you were to look at her a name like that just wouldn't spring to mind! Interesting earlier posts (from 2010!) that mention anagrams and the like. The current owners even suggested that maybe a 'C' could be added, Clover, which keeps 'lover' in the name but is now completely different. I have ridden my luck all my life so Clover would suit (it would be a no-brainer if I were Irish!). Aie aie aie, decisions decisions...!! :-)

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
I only reserve the right to rename a boat in the event "wind", "dance", "moon", or "runner" is in the name, such as in what seems like half the boats in my area. I am superstitious, but for the right deal will put up with Neptunes' wrath

Since the last post was four years ago, he's probably found out if the name change brought bad luck or not already.
How 'bout it Jim, you still with us?
I sure hope Beersmith didn't use the anagram 'Wins Dong'

It is a well known FACT: if you change the name of your boat you will DIE*.

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
Go ahead, change it.
Every boat I've owned has been named Life Of Reilly, they've all taken care of me, even when I was as green as can be. I think the name has brought me good luck.
Of course finding a virgin to pee in the bilge may be a challenge.
Hey, whats the worst that could happen?

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
Changed the name of my old boat from Idle Wind to Lassiger Wind at the request of a former wife (German lady)... the boat lasted longer than the marriage so changed it back and smooth sailing ever since! Who says you can't fix things? Phil

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
I believe we create our own realities from our actions and our beliefs so if you are superstitious I certainly would not change the name. Having said that I know two people that changed the names on their boats and one of them sunk within 6 months the other one never seemed to want to run and he had several different mechanics work on it. As for my boat it has an appropriate name "Catch 22" and it fits my lifestyle exactly.

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
We make our own luck. Has nothing to do with renaming a boat.
I renamed mine to irritate an ex. Didn't like the original name which I thought was lame. I was originally going to name it, "Wasn't Me", and the dink would be named "Me Neither".
No ceremony, unless you count about 300 pier parties and spilling an awful lot of booze in the cockpit and down below.

Re: Is it Bad Luck to Change Names of Used Boats?
Be careful about accepting name suggestions when you don't speak the language that the name comes from.

the name on my boat was(is) embarrassingly misspelled.
however, since i'm not the type to temp faith (or a much of a speller either) i just left it as is when i bought it...
i had other worries at the time...like learning how to dock and anchor.
