Is it a Bristol 30?

Hello, looking at what is said to be a bristol 30, but the rudder is seperate from the keel.
Were any of these made, or does someone recognise that this actually is.
I only have a picture to go by.
thanks..

I don't think so. I had a Bristol 32, windows are different, older Bristols had a keel hung rudder, deck layout is different- I don't think it's a BRistol. Maybe someone else can figure out what kind of boat it is..

Doubt it. That rudder wasn't skeg hung. And the lines are totally different. As are the ports. The coach looks almost like an Alberg 30. But the hull is wrong.

kavw, I was under the impression that all Bristol rudders were either keel or skeg hung. I did some research and found the Bristol 33 was a spade rudder. I do not believe the boat in your post is a Bristol 30, unless a major modification was made to the rudder and keel.

Doesn't have the look of an old Bristol to me at all. A Bristol of that vintage would have far more teak trim.

Beats me what it is, though.

Re: is it a bristol 30?

Looks like a PO could have moved the rudder from the keel to its present location. Know that was done on other boats. The keel is quite long for a fin keel though maybe not so if it was built during the early fin keel revolution. Not hard to imagine such a modification looking at the B30 underbody.

Re: is it a bristol 30?

Ok, so far I know it is a bristol 29.1, was named Abigale, and the rudder was glassed over, and the rudder added aft. Hull #11
(everything is online eventually!)

Its 6 hours of driving for me to go look at the boat, and I have exams for another week so visiting the boat is not going to happen.

Did people do this modification to improve handling? Or just because it was easier than fixing a broken rudder shaft or pintle? Some sort of back up for offsore cruising?
I emailed an owner(listed some years ago) but haven't heard back.

Any opinions if this is worth it, or should I just not bother and wait for another deal to come up?

Want to get a boat that my gf and I can do short trips on the lakes, but has the potential to do longer trips offshore when I finish school, to south america and such.
Really looking for something 30ft or just less. (limit for cruising tax in the states as I recall).

Cheers

Kris

Hey Kris. Glad you found some more info. The one thing I'd be worried about is what else did the PO do to the boat? Check out the Rawson 30. Easy to handle and quite a few have done serious offshore cruising.

Re: is it a bristol 30?

Chris look into a Bristol 24, 26 or 27. They're great for your goal and pretty cheap these days. I'd also look at Pearsons and Cape Dory if around assuming you like full keel boats.

Think about whether or not the gf likes to heel. This generation of boat has a narrow beam and are tender (aka tippy) to 20-30* then rock solid. My first few sails with my spouse involved a lot of 'no tipppppppppy!'. Now it's not a problem but we went to a wider beam to ease that feeling.

I would personally keep looking on the boat you listed earlier.
