Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

I have been looking at a lot of 27 - 31' full keel Alberg designs and they seem to be almost universally well-regarded. My questions:

Are there known issues with his boats I should watch out for, or issues with particular models?

Is there a particular model which is considered better than the rest? Subjective, I'm sure!

Thanks for your input!

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

Here's a good list of Alberg designs plus a few others.

https://atomvoyages.com/planning/goo...oats-list.html

I have a Bristol 27, and have had it for 9 years. It's had very few problems although the hull to deck joint does leak in some rainwater on the shelves.

My boat is 46 years old, and had sat on the hard for 5 years when I bought it for $2,000 in 2011.

Characterized by a spoon bow, pleasing sheer, moderate overhangs, and long keel, the Alberg boats convey a traditional look, which I [subjectively] don’t particularly favour.
His 28.33 Ft Pearson “Triton” was heralded as the first mass produced fiberglass cruising sailboat.
Evidently, Carl Alberg designed 56 production fiberglass boats, resulting in over 10,000 boats.

Welcome.

Regarding the question in the thread title, no Lapworth was.

Oh great, now I have another designer to research. Just when I thought I was getting a handle on this haha.

Do any models between 27 and 31' stand out so I can narrow my reading?

She's really pretty! Did you have to do much work when you bought it?

What are you going to do with the boat?
Learn to sail?
Coastal sail?
Gunkhole?
Go Round the World?

Cal28 is a good beginner’s boat.
Outboard to engine issues are cheaper and easier to deal with.
Lots of headroom and interior space due to raised cabin.
Good sailer and lots of sail area for light winds.

27.1, 29.1 & 30.1 would all be fine too.

My fault I didn't mention it, but I'm looking for a full keel and it appears the Cal28 has a spade rudder. I will be learning to sail on this boat and my short-term plan is to take it to the Caribbean as a liveaboard.

Full keel is a strong personal preference or some other reason?
Why 27-30’?

I am one of many who admire Carl Alberg designs. I had a Cape Dory Typhoon at on time and a good friend has an Alberg 37. I love the aesthetics of his designs. But, the things I like about them, spoon bow, low freeboard, graceful sheer, comparatively narrow hull all have trade offs. Less volume, less tankage, smaller cabins, more initial tenderness.

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

I'm going off what I've read and heard some cruisers say, which is that a spade rudder is easily damaged or disabled if it's not protected by the keel or at least a skeg. I read a couple of horror stories about being off coast with no way to steer.

The Allied Seawind is a boat I've been looking at too but they're either too nice (expensive) or not nice enough (lots of repairs I don't have the knowledge for). I'll check out the others you've listed. I think the Pearson was nice too.

The length is from some advice to buy the smallest boat you'll be comfortable in. I'll be singlehanding so I don't need a lot of cabin room, and from what I've read the longer the boat, the more maintenance and expenses.

Also, why shorter: my budget is about $20K and I'm looking for a boat in good repair for relatively little money, so I can put the rest into offshore gear. Condition being equal, it seems longer boats cost more.

Thanks Gord. Would you be willing to share a couple of designs you're more fond of if you have a moment and care to keep within my wishlist specs, 27-31' full keel?

I am a little concerned about the tankage. I have my eye on a Cape Dory 27 but it only holds 24 gallons of water, which doesn't seem like a lot on an otherwise well-regarded boat.

Carl Alberg designed most of the Cape Dory line. My own favorite is the CD31. Singlehanded to Bermuda four times and a great coastal cruiser also.

Re: Is Alberg the best production designer ever?

Good answer on size.
Nothing you get in this size range will have enough factory installed tankage.
