And a minor gripe: when IP found that the original CPs needed upgrading, why in the world did they faff around with the 304L and 316 stages? The difference in cost between those grades and the 316L (or better yet 2205) is so very small compared to the cost of the boat, and would have removed the angst from so many owners minds.

I got my Titanium chain plates from John Franta a Colligo Marine.
No Corrosion issues, ever.
Commercial Titanium has become a lot cheaper in last few years.
He does them quite reasonably priced. As a point of comparison I found they were only marginally more than other more traditional material quotes.
I am quite happy with my decision to go with them.
If you want any other info let me know.

I have no answers for you, but often wonder if we worry too much.
Any one find a record of a rig lost... ever ....due to the plates on an IP?
Is that any different than 25 year old outside plates where you dont know the condition of the trapped SS bolts?

My (former) 1990 IP35 dismasted at sea in 2012 due to crevice corrosion in the forwardmost starboard chainplate. 20-25kts of wind, seas 3-5. Was close-hauled and had just tacked over to stbd tack. The mast broke halfway between the coachroof and gooseneck of the boom. Went forward with bolt cutters and an Opinel and cut everything away because I was concerned that the mast over the side would hole my boat (we went beam-to the seas as soon as we lost headway and the mast was sliding up and down). Actually rebuilt everything to the tune of a whole lot of money. The chainplate replacement portion of the bill was about $10,000. Said at the time that I'd never buy another boat with encapsulated chainplates. Well, my current Hans Christian 33 has encapsulated chainplates I do plan to add external chainplates in the near future. Your best bet may be to go the external route as well. It will certainly be less of a headache, and I never quite trusted my IP35 after she was rebuilt.

Re: IP 40 Chainplates

A64pilot got his chainplates from Allied Titanium:
https://www.alliedtitanium.com/produ...dc_Results.php
And they were installed by Mack Yacht Services at:
4619 SE Manatee Lane
Stuart, Florida 34997
Chainplates - Mack Yacht Services

I am also in the market to buy an IP and have been doing a ton of research on what I know are upcoming projects.

1998 IP 40. Replaced the original chainplates and what they took out was very corroded. So very glad we did it! Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Re: IP 40 Chainplates

Thank you all for the info and great advice. I withdrew the offer, and am pretty bummed - she was in amazing shape! If I were on the east coast, closer to the two shops who specialize in IP chain plate replacement - I’d have continued..... but here in So Cal, it’s a much bigger and more expensive problem.

Thank you all again!!!

Re: IP 40 Chainplates

You must have been looking at Notre Reve, The 1996 IP40 out on Harbor Island in San Diego. I went and took a look at it a few weeks ago with Ian from California Yachts. That is a really nice boat and decently priced. The pictures on Yachtworld don't do it any justice. I didn't really take a good look around because it was sale pending but I went below to take a look at her interior and engine compartment. The Engine compartment was immaculate despite having 3700 hours on it. Not a drop of oil in the bilge. The previous owners took good care of it. Despite the boat being in really good condition, I wouldn't want to take it offshore without at least inspecting the Chainplates and we all know what that entails. If you're going to do that, you might as well replace them.

I also went up and looked at an IP350 "Alobar" up in Santa Barbara that just had a huge $20k price reduction to $75k (Yachtworld shows $89k but the broker told me it was $75k). Alobar could use some work and it is a great price but it would need chainplates and holding tank replacement and a previous survey found a soft spot in the keel. I did some research and I couldn't find anything in CA that seems like they know what they are doing when it comes to issues commonly associated with an Island Packet. The 350 is much smaller than the 40 but it is almost worth it to haul it out of the water and truck it to Mack or Snead in Tampa for a complete overhaul.

Heading to North Carolina tomorrow to continue our boat search than on to Florida.
