Insurance for Transatlantic Crossing

Just wondering what most boaters buy in terms of insurance for their transatlantic crossings. My present policy limits me to 25 miles offshore so I need to think whether to buy insurance or go without it when I cross. Would I have a problem entering the Med without insurance? When I asked about extending my policy for a 10 day run to Bermuda from Norfolk, VA they asked for an "additional" $1,000 for the two weeks. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I suggest first you have a very bad policy or one that views you as a significant risk

The usual requirement for transatlantic is three people

You only need third party liability for marinas in the med. That's usually cheap as chips

Pretty sure when we asked Pantaenius about this they said the two of us would be fine during our ARC rally crossing in Nov.

You've got me worried now, I'll go and check with them again.

We did Florida to Australia and the minimum was 2 people. Must depend on insurer

Gerry, What amounts of additional premium, if any, did you have to pay for the crossing and who are you insured with? Thanks.

The policy was taken out specifically for a 12 month voyage from FL to Aus via Panama. The policy didn't include the transit so we had to notify the agent. The agency was IMIS who now handle Pantaneus

Time to get an insurer who will insure you for all your travels. Yes, it might be more than your old policy but not additional charges every time you turn around. Be open with your plans, both definite and possible and get with someone who can handle them all.

I singlehand. For a Bermuda trip my company wanted a current survey and a crew of two minimum. In other words they didn't want my business. I chose to forego any insurance for the trip. My insurance consisted of a life raft and an EPIRB.

Jim, Are you saying that the Bermuda authorities didn't have any issues with an uninsured boat in their country? I'm willing to go uninsured but thought that foreign authorities would ask for proof of insurance at check in. Can someone confirm this? Thanks

All anyone requires is liability. Hull insurance is just for your benefit.

Last time I checked on passage insurance a couple of years ago, a crew of three was required. I'm solo so didn't help me. Bought insurance for Hawaii so I was covered when I got to 50 miles of the islands but naked between the California and Hawaii limits.
