Re: Inspecting a used boat with inboard engine

I just heard back from the broker. The owner accepted my lower offer. As I suspected, it was an older couple and they were just interested in unloading it. He told the broker that the engine ran the last time they had it in the water and I have no reason to doubt him (yet).

But it's over. I am now a boat owner again. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll probably be posting questions about the upcoming repairs and maintenance. As they say, this is the happiness day in my life, until I sell it myself!

Inspecting a used boat with inboard engine

Congrats! I was gonna say I bought my boat off the hard. I came and scoped it out and offered the guy 1/2 for it as is.

He listed it saying he was going to do x, y and z before he sold it. When I met him to see the boat it didn't need much. And he even helped me paint the bottom.

I still talk to him regularly and update him with the progress of my restoration. He's happy it came to me since I use it and he got it donated to his company by someone who inherited it when her dad passed.

Congrats of your "new" boat - happy sailing!

Can't say I had heard of a 1GS before - of course that doesn't mean much .

Not a 1GM perhaps??? Lots of them still around and they are pretty dependable little engine even though they vibrate a fair bit - watch for the condition of the engine mounts - especially if they are the Yanmar ones - they have a short life.

If you have to replace them, ask what others are using.

Also keep an eye on the exhaust mixing elbow, they do clog up without maintenance.

Congratulations Jim it should be a fun boat for you and your family to get back on the water with. Let me know if you need a hand on starting the engine or something else that requires more than two hands.
