Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
I have a friend selling a 1991 Beneteau Moorings 38 for a great price. Apparently they've had it bout 20 years and all is in great condition except rigging and paint + small issues like ceiling trim peeling. Its proven very difficult to find much information about this boat. I believe it has a fin keel with a bulb, and a spade rudder, but does anybody have any experience with these boats? Looking for gulf sailing and caribbean in the future. Mostly will be live board for 2 years while I finish my contract.

Re: Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
I was going to buy one of the Moorings Beneteaus a few years ago.
I discussed this option with one of my "respected" sailing mentors,
and his response was " Would you buy a used Taxi Cab?"
sounds like they can be good deals, JUST BEWARE!!!
cheers,

Probably better than yours!!!
This is why MANY sailors hesitate to voice an opinion on these forums!!!
Suggesting that someone be careful buying a 26 year old boat, 6 spent in charter,,,make sense to me,
if you have an issue with that, then sir,

No mention of the actual list of refits and replacements.... Have seen a lot of worn out boats cruising. Doesn't mean that's the way many of us wish to go.
Considering an ex charter/training boat now with lots of replacements. Makes me think of all the rest needs replacing....

Let's have a look at this. The OP asks " does anybody have any experience with these boats?" You reply "JUST BEWARE", apparently gaining this invaluable knowledge from a friend who might be in the used cab business.
MarkJ replies that he's had experience with a Moorings Beneteau boat. And you seem to take offence from his reply suggesting that a post like MarkJ's is why many hesitate to voice an opinion on these forums.
I don't get it.

What part of being careful don't you get!
This is the OP's first sailboat
The cavalier attitude that Life is Great, just go for it ! is REALLY mis-leading, especially to an inexperienced boat owner and sailor.
I'm sure the OP doesn't have the time or cash to waste
on a beat, abused, ex-charter boat,,
NOT saying for him to not investigate doing pursuing this,
just be aware, and careful.
Sorry if sound advice offends you,

Re: Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
Hey Kamryn:
Sorry for turning your post into a pissing match!
I have commented before of your questions, and think I understand what you are looking for!
Like all boaters, I just want you to be careful! Especially with your first sailboat purchase.
We all work hard for our $$$, and I know you're working hard for it.
The idea is safe, happy, and healthy,,,
It annoys me when other posters just say "Go for it!",, in certain circumstances, maybe,, this is a biggee!
Mark J offered ZERO info,,, and he had the boat! and I'm the bad guy!
Enjoy buddy, and again, sorry for getting into this thread off track!
MOCHA!

Buying a used rental car would be a better analogy. As with rental cars, not all boats in charter are the same.

Re: Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the responses.
I recently put an offer in on the 91 beneteau moorings 38. I live in Nashville and it is located in Knoxville at the same Yacht Club my good bud is docked at (which is the reason I heard about it). The seller is 78 years old and getting out of sailing, and has had the boat since 2006 and been to the caribbean 4 times. The boat looks great to me when I went and viewed it. The interior is solid minus the vinyl peeling off in some spots, but otherwise looks like a sound boat. It comes with some good electronics as well. The only considerable things that I have found wrong with it so far that I know of:
- Roller furling got damaged during transport and it does not have one, only has the forestay
- Jib sheet is original (1991)
- Main sail is (2006)
- all running rigging is original and frayed
- bottom job is 6 years old.
The good news is the engine was rebuilt in 2006 and has about 1500 hours on it.
That is all before the survey. So we put an offer on it and were able to lock it in for 37k.
The survey is next week and I would like to know some more info on the boat, as I am having a hard time finding a lot of info on it considering it was obviously built for moorings charter in that year. I have heard to not buy a charter boat.
My immediate plans are to live aboard for exactly 2 years while I finish my schooling, on a local lake here, sailing around and shaking her down. And then take it to the gulf, and ultimately the islands for an extended vacation. I know this boat can handle that no problem. But I am curious as to peoples opinions on this boat, and if you think its a good deal. It seems great so far, and would probably cost about 10k to get all rigging/furling system/bottom job/ship it to the other side of the state in order.
It is the shoal draft version so the keel is I believe 4'10, and from what the owner said the mast is 52 feet. Im wondering if this boat is going to be decent for extended cruising and what everyones thoughts are. Just making sure Im not getting into a boat that will be too light and dangerous in anything other than perfect weather.
Thanks in advance. Heres the link to it.

Re: Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
I can't speak to the boat capabilities, but I do recommend you get a person out to quote you for the repairs. I feel the 10K for all new rigging and a new furling system seems cheap. I could be wrong as I personally have never had to get new rigging and a new furling system. However, I do know a good handful that have and they paid north of 10k just for new rigging, mind you their boats are a little bigger. When I was looking for a furling system for a 22' boat (Cal 22) I was getting quotes for nearly 1.5K and that was me assembling it.

Re: Info on Beneteau Moorings 38
Also, that jib is not going to be cheap. Not sure it's condition but I am sure a 17 year old sail that has been used will be near stretched bed sheet status.
