I think I Want to Buy a Nauticat 33

I am seriously interested in buying a Nauticat 33 for single handed long- term (virtual liveaboard) long distance cruising.

I have seen 2 which interst me: both are 1974 versions.

Any advice; cautions; suggestions; or general comments would be appreciated before I go to view them.

Thanks!

Some of them are made (on a factory build hull) by amateurs so there might be good and bad ones around..

Re: I think I want to buy a Nauticat 33

I sailed a nauticat 36 or 38, can't remember her exact length. Anyways, we sailed her from Guatemala to Isla Mujeras. I found the quality very nice, and her sailing abilities much better than I expected out of a motor sailor.
She has more windage than I am used to but she always felt stable and comfortable. The layout down below was fantastic, and again, the quality of construction is very well done. The owners were very happy with her.

I did not realize they had nauticat kit boats, the one I crewed was definitely factory finished.
Hope that helps a little,
Erika

A lovely, well-built motorsailer with inadequate headroom.

I'd have bought one years ago if I could fit inside it.

Re: I think I Want to Buy a Nauticat 33

I absolutely love mine, but I've never been aboard the 33. The 44 is very nice. Never seen or heard of a Nauticat kit boat, as far as I know they were all factory. The later model Nauticats are Sparkman and Stephens designs. They are very high quality boats with solid glass hulls and decks. They inlay the teak in the solid fiberglass deck and then cut off and grind flush the fasteners below decks, followed by glassing another laminate to the underside. This results in the driest boat with a teak deck I've ever seen. They come in sloop, ketch, and staysail schooner rigs. They have huge tankage and big engines for their size. They built a lot of them so you should have no trouble finding a deal on a nice one in your area in this market. They were built in Rauma, Finland. The quality of joinery and general construction is outstanding, look at the link to pics under my avatar. I think if you set up good storm shutters for the pilot house windows they are a great cruiser.

Re: I think I Want to Buy a Nauticat 33

About ten years ago, I was looking for such a boat, and I remenber some pieces of advice I was given:
- despite a strong construction, models built before 1980 had a wooden deckhouse, with frequent mould rotenness, due to age
- you had better to look for a more recent design with a GRP superstructure
- however, before 1980 there was an all GRP built model: the "mediterranean"

A lot of used boat on these web sites:

- YachtWorld.com Boats and Yachts for Sale (then got to N for Nauticat or S for Siltala). It's probably the hugest site for used boats
- BoatShop24 - Manufacturer list - Sailing Boat - A
