pirate Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

I am in boat selection mode for East Coast, Caribbean and Pacific bluewater cruising. I am considering Outbound 46, Island Packet 465 and Hylas 46 or 49. I heard that Hylas 46 have suffered from hull deck joint leaks and subsequent delamination of (non marine grade?) ply.

Any thoughts on any of these yachts or any further information on problems with Hylas 46/49?

Thanks forum. your thoughts and experience much appreciated.

My bet for the Schumacher OUTBOUND 46, having sailed a Hylas and i like it, i found it a wet boat, i mean that low freeboard !!!! never hear from hull to deck isues, and the Island Packet to old dated for my taste , the quality is really good , windward perfomance is not so good, if you buy it new ok, if you get a old one check chainplates , i dont know if they swicht from Fg Chainplates to something more easy to inspect.
Cheers.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Hobiehobie.
They're all fine boats; but IMO the Outbound is truly exceptional.

Re: Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

Coincidentally, I looked at the outbound boats a few days ago, (only online). They look very nice.

I always like to see photos of the boats being discussed.

As I recall, this one is longer (52 or 54??)

Schumacher designs have always been fast boats with good handling qualities so you can bet it will sail really well. I don't know anything about the builder but as far as design it would be my choice.

That is the OB 52, very nice but probably too big. I am interested in the 46 (which is really the 44 with a two foot swim platform added).

Re: Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

We looked at a boat yesterday and the broker spoke very highly about the Outbound. Unless I'm confusing conversations, I think he owned one. He has sailed across the pond and all around the Caribbean extensively. He talked about Hylas and IP too but seemed to prefer the Outbound over those and several others. He said he had one OB 46 for sale now that was pristine and he wanted to show us but it was too late to see it.

Re: Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

There was an Outbound for sale in Ohio this summer past.....not sure if it's still available or not.

Outbound sailboats for sale by owner.

Re: Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

Look at a new or used Oyster instead. Better layout and none of the problems you're worried about. Manufactured in the UK with great customer support. Check out the Oyster brokerage in Newport, RI... you'll be pleasantly surprised like we were.

Hylas, Island Packet and Jeanneau were yachts that we'd made offers on, until we met the guys over at the Oyster brokerage at the Fall boat show 2011, and changed our focus.

Re: Hylas, Outbound, Island Packet

Outbounds are built at the same yard that builds Passport.

I've had the chance to sail an Outbound 46 several times and crawl all over a couple of them. I can honestly say I've never seen a fiberglass built better than the Outbound. In terms of solid FG construction, proper tabbing and bonding, and plain outright strength I believe it's among the very best fiberglass boats in existence. Feedback from people who've crossed the Pacific in them is that there have generally been fewer problems than average, and most of those are typical systems issues. No on I've talked to has had a problem with the hull or rig.

Sailing-wise, you can definitely tell Carl's influence. It's a heavy, solid boat but still points and sails reasonably in light air (for the weight) and is great once the wind's up over 10 knots. It's really a well behaved pussycat in bigger wind and seas. Reports from those who've crossed the Pacific on them is that they're faster than the average cruising boat and really treat the crew nicely. The solent rig is a great layout for a cruising couple IMO. It's a sailors boat.

Interiors are a matter of personal taste. I think the 46 has an outstanding layout for a true ocean crossing vessel - functional, easy to move around, lots of handholds, and good sea berths. The galley is a little small, but at least there's a lot of storage. But that's all just my personal bias, and some may find the interior too plain.

A broker is like a real estate salesman, will tell you anything he thinks you want to hear.
