Hurricane Florence

I am smack dab in the path of Hurricane Florence and my boat is on a slip in the Neuse River. Pretty protected but I am really worried about Cat 4-5 storm surge. Tomorrow is my last day buttoning her up. I ran triple dock lines all around, on each cleat I have 2 normal lines that allow stretch and one longer 1" anchor type line as a failsafe in the event the other two lines pop. Everything has enough slack that keeps it from hitting the pylons but will allow for the rise and fall of the surge. I will most likely have to cut the line off of the pylons since i used clinch knots. The batteries are charged and the bilge pump is in working order. All thru hull valves are closed.

I have this feeling deep down she is going to get hurt regardless.

Any suggestions?

Re: Hurricane Florence

All sails and canvas off and stoved?
Chafe guards and big fenders?
Anchors out and dug in?

Re: Hurricane Florence

I just wrapped a crap load of line over the main and anchored the boom. Genoa is down and stowed. Only thing I aint got is guards. I only have one other boat on my port so all the fenders are there. I dont think the owner is around or even cares

Re: Hurricane Florence

I would strip the main off and in fact remove everything on the deck that isn't bolted on. The main may be wrapped well enough to keep it from blowing loose but it adds a lot of windage which adds to the stress on the lines.

Re: Hurricane Florence

My solar panels stayed on during Wilma in 2005, but my buddy’s panels blew away.
If you get a direct hit, better strip everything off.
I have seen sails come loose at 110 mph, it gets ugly and noisy, like cannon shots.

Re: Hurricane Florence

Forecasts are putting us in the wall of the eye so we will see full force winds regardless of category. From the old timers at the marina, the water level can rise up to 14 ft in our marina.

You going to be there to adjust lines and fenders, or do you have to evacuate?
14’ is a lot, but you could be lucky and a get low tide at the same time the ‘cane hits.
During Irma last years we had high tide for the storm surge and fishes were swimmin above my dock.

Re: Hurricane Florence

Outer banks already got the order to evacuate. Carteret county is suppose to get the order tomorrow afternoon. My wife is 34 weeks pregnant and I got kids so we are getting outta here regardless. Suppose to be bad flooding and we are next to a river. The house might not be here when we get back.

I tied my lines as high as i could on the pylons. the bow lines are very slack so I think I could get 14 feet. There isnt anything behind by boat except a marsh so I am good on that angle.

Absolutely remove the panels. If you have a bimini or dodger then completely remove that as well. Don't just wrap and tie it down. Basically anything on deck bigger than a breadbox that you can remove, do it.

Re: Hurricane Florence

If you’re on the Neuse your going to get absolutely epic storm surge. Could well be eight feet or more. It’s all wind driven tide there as you know and sustained wind out of the NE is the worst and that’s what you’ll get. Oriental got @ 6’ during the last cane and this is going to be way way worse. You could end up in a parking lot.

You might want to consider taking her as far up one of the little creeks in the area and throwing out as many anchors as you can find.
