Many times stronger.

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

Re the DuFour (sp?) traveller issue:

Accidental gybes happen, Smack. They happen to damn near everyone who sails much. IMO EVERY traveller and its supporting structure should be strong enough to withstand such an event, or several such events in succession with no damage whatsoever. It does not require such heavy scantlings to achieve this, so why not? The only reason is that it saves the builder money, and with any luck (for the builder) the fatal accidental gybe won't happen during the warranty period!

Oh... re your cleats and the drogue: if you are placed in the position of needing to use the drogue before you beef up the structure, some folks have taken a line leading forward from the cleat(s) to deck winches and placed some load in the opposite direction from the drag from the drogue. I am not a good enough engineer to evaluate the practice numerically, but intuitively it should help distribute the load to stronger structures.

Smack, I'd bet you have glassed in backing plates just like I have. My Hunter rode out hurricane Ike (Cat 2) in Baytown, and no cleats pulled out.

I call the busted cleat BS. First of all, you use two lines off the bow, one either side to the pennant on the ball. Not likely to lose two cleats at the same time. Probably the lines chaffed through.

There seems to be a lot of BS here. The silence I hear in response to my questions a few posts ago speaks loudly to the nature of those who criticize here. They never seem to be able to support their statements.

Im not going to pick a fight here, but you can ask, what you want to know exactly?

Post #52. Hope I don't have to ask a third time.

I'm not 'picking a fight'. Rather trying, perhaps a futile effort, to identify the truth.

Take this for granted as a example , the new Oceanis series from Beneteau use fender washers under the cleats.

Page 10.

Jeaneau to. The Sun Odyssey perfomance line series use fender wahers.

RTB "My Hunter rode out hurricane Ike (Cat 2) in Baytown, and no cleats pulled out."

What size were the waves? (Wind alone doesn't apply much load)

So 2 is "by far, many brands"? One if you consider who owns Jeanneau.

I know. However, there are all kinds of accidental gybes. I'm going to bet that the one on that Dufor didn't happen in 10 knots of breeze. Accidental gybes in gale force winds can bring down an entire rig. So I think we're just talking degrees here.

It really is weird isn't it? It makes you wonder what they are afraid of.
