Hullz-a-poppin?

Hi all,

These are a few pictures I took of a boat that I am thinking of doing a survey on. It is a Freedom 28 Cat Ketch and I know many have strong feelings for and against this boat but I am specifically concerned about the condition of the hull. It has cratering as in the surface of the moon and the broker says just sand and paint it. I have heard that brokers sometimes "misspeak" or assume the prospective buyer, me, has more money than whomever you pray to. Does 'sand and paint' sound right to you all?

Thanks very much to all that respond.

Sorry about that. It appears that I did not get the 4 pictures in here correctly.
I will correct this tonight.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: Hullz-a-poppin now with pictures

Do these round craters look like they were once blisters that may or may not have been dealt with correctly?

Thanks very much,
Jim

Re: Hullz-a-poppin?

Here we go again. There are others on the forum that know fiberglass blisters better than I, being a steel hull type. Based on past discussions, yes, they have to be ground/sanded out, and rebuilt. The one on the upper left looks like it is through the outer fiberglass and into the hull balsum, not a good sign. This is not a pretty hull.

Re: Hullz-a-poppin?

Two thoughts.

1) Think in context to your use.

There are several boats that have not been used in years in our local marinas, that my wife and I might be interested in at the “right” price.

Some of the problems these boats display won’t impact the way we would use the boat for a few years, others would need to be fixed immediately, others might be deal killers, and some of the boats might just be considered as a “starter” boat that might be traded off and replaced before heading out for extended cruising.

In our near term time frame there are a fair number of imperfections that we can definitely put up with as long as we have a plan to remedy the issues before taking the leap to full time cruising.

2) If your use and risks dictates get professional advice.

A survey and a quote/opinion from a reputable yard for the repair.

Hello, sasjzl,

I'm not an expert.

Some of those pits look pretty deep to me. Some people might follow the broker's advice, but imo, it is wrong.

However, to be sure, hire a surveyor, and request detailed information on correct repair. It could include peeling, grinding out, barrier coats, re-fairing, priming, and bottom painting. It will NOT be cheap.

At least this owner didn't haul, patch and paint, so you can't see them.

Re: Hullz-a-poppin?

Not sure about the 28, but IIRC some Freedoms have balsa cored hulls. I'd be really wary of such a hull with deep pitting as shown, and want a VERY careful survey to determine if the core is compromised.

It's kinda scary, that photo!
