Hull I.d. number

Greetings. I own a beneteau first 1986 and have been looking everywhere for the hull ID. If anyone can offer some insight as to where it is i would be most grateful. Cheers-

The builders ID # should be found on the upper starboard side of the transom.

Depends on how old it is. Sometimes one can find the # inside the hull in the transom or bow area.

The primary HIN must be permanently affixed (so that it can be seen from outside the boat) to the starboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.
Boats manufactured or imported on or after August 1, 1984, also have a duplicate secondary HIN affixed somewhere on an unexposed location inside the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware.

Our 1998 Beneteau Oceanis 36CC has it on the transom at just below deck join level plus there is a secondary one on small builders plate riveted on to the woodwork half bulkhead immediately forward of the chart table.

Starboard side just under toe rail they will be 1/2 " in size

Hi. I have looked everywhere mentoned above and no luck. Maybe they got sanded off by the previous owner. Dunno. Its frustrating because to get insurance they ask for the hull id.

We've had our boat for 12 years and JUST this summer found the secondary site. It's a Catalina 42 and it is actually under one of the head sinks inside the cabinet. I happened to be on the floor cleaning and opened that cabinet up and saw it - you won't see it from a standing position. Good hiding spot for sure!

Must be a careless or not knowledgewable repair job of the transom. I once looked at C&C 36 without the hull # where it was supposed to be. Turned out the guy had the transom repaired but whoever repaired it did not re-stamp the # as they should've done.

Mine didn't have a hull number either when I bought it. So two things I did were to take adhesive numbers 2" tall and stuck them to the inside of the transom and then glassed over them a couple times and blended the edges.

Second, I had a brass plaque engraved with the standard 1/4" letters & numbers, then routered out the spot on the transom where they are supposed to be and fiberglassed it in leaving only a space around the numbers like it were casted in. Then painted over it. You can't tell it from a factory set. And no one has ever looked to see if they were even there. But it official now.

Do you (or a PO) have old registration papers tucked away in the corner somewhere? The HIN is on my state registration papers, and should be on documentation papers if that's how you're set up. Having built a few as well, the state where you register your boat (if you do) may be willing to assign one. I've had a few assigned.

HIN is really a US thing (since 1972) that has since been adopted by many jurisdictions, so there most likely is one, but if the boat was never intended for import to the US there's a chance (remote, IMO) that it never had one.

My 1985 French built First had a metal builder's plate in the back of the cockpit with a 4 digit hull number stamped on it. There was no hull number on the transom. The surveyors, title company and insurance griped, but accepted it.
