How important is bottom paint?

I am considering the purchase of a boat that's in need of bottom paint I want to sale it about a thousand miles before I do the work, how detrimental could that be?

Re: How important is bottom paint?

The question that should concern you is how does the bottom look now? Was the boat kept in salt water or fresh? In salt water marine growth can root into the hull, and taking it off can remove odd bits. In freshwater,
you can just get a lot of slime.
If there's a reef on the bottom, that 1,000 miles will take you a long time.

Doesn't hurt the boat at all. How quickly do you want to get to your destination?

Quick lift and waterblast would be a big help I would think

So by bottom paint do you meant just the Antifoul or is it totally nude?

Re: How important is bottom paint?

Many sources say you can leave bare fiberglass in the water for up to two weeks without any concern - just wash it when you pull it out. If the boat's on the hard, and you're doing a quick trip where you're going to pressure wash and sand (I imagine it has old paint on it now) afterwards, then go ahead and do it. Bottom painting itself isn't a difficult job so you could probably do it where it is, but if it's not your preference I wouldn't worry about it.
There have been a couple of threads about people asking if they could just scrub the hull in the water every couple days rather than bottom paint at all. So yes, a short trip on a hull starting out clean shouldn't be a problem, but I'm far from expert.

You'll regret not painting the bottom, guaranteed.

A thousand miles is not a short trip

Time in the water is more important than miles under the keel.

On the hard so I assume there is no growth/barnacles.

If it is painted at all and you are talking <2 months I'd go for it.

If it is bare fiberglass I would hold up.

If it's out of the water and clean... no problem... however... paint it now and save the hauling costs!
Having said that... I'm not convinced bottom paint does a lot. I've had to spend most of a day scraping a reef off the bottom with recent Trinidad bottom paint.... in the carribean...

If it's on the hard, why wouldn't you paint it now?
