How do I know if my rudder shaft needs grease?

Hello,

I've got a new-to-me Shannon 38 and (among other things) I am trying to do what's best for my rudder shaft. The previous owner said he'd been meaning to grease it but he never has. He said to look for a grease fitting but I've looked and I don't think there is one. The action on the rudder is good, the cables look good and the surveyor found the rudder and related hardware to be sound.

I lost the rudder on my last boat to a corroded shaft and I'm very eager to avoid ever repeating that. But it also seems that if the shaft is not meant to be greased then it could do more harm than good.

Anyone know if/how I should grease the shaft or fittings, or the hinge point at the bottom? What kind of periodic maintenance do you do? I will try to contact the manufacturer eventually but I wanted to check here first. Thanks for any input.

It'll be interesting to see what a Shannon owner saus but I bet there's a stuffing box with old fashioned packing where the rudder shaft enters the hull. The bronze shoe at the base of your keel which the rudder rests upon probably has a stainless pin on which the rudder pivots. If there is no binding or slop in the system you're good to go.
