holes in hull by the rudder
Hi All,
I'm inheriting a 1969 27' Irwin that has been out of the water 4 years, but seems to be in really good shape. I haven't owned a boat before, but based on the posts that I've read in the Forum it will at the very least be a fine educational experience for me . My first concern about the boat is that I noticed two holes in the hull next to where the rudder stem enters. They are equidistant from the rudder stem, about 1" in diameter and seem purposeful, but common sense says ! I've tried to search Google for an answer but had no luck. Anyone have an idea?

Re: holes in hull by the rudder
Welcome to CF. I know this is GordMay's job but in these trying times...
Ayup...Cockpit drains too?
Be sure to check hoses as mentioned below in other replies, mine was cracked and all water in cockpit from rain, etc. ended up inside boat.

Post a picture is always best.
The holes could be whatever, cooling water intake for the engine, head discharge, Cockpit drains, whatever.
If possible, open the cockpit floor hatch and look at the hull from the inside, you may see hoses, seacocks whatever. Follow the hoses.

Re: holes in hull by the rudder
Generally speaking, "holes" in hull will have some sort of fitting in them if they are there for a reason. It is possible, but most unlikely, that holes WITHOUT a fitting in them are deliberately made for some reason.
You should be able to gain at least VISUAL access, either through the cockpit lockers or via the engine compartment, to see if there is some sort of hose or pipe on the INSIDE of the hull at the location where the holes are.
On a boat this, the cockpit is in all likelihood fitted with drains (called "scuppers"). You can test it by simply pouring a bucket of water into the cockpit and seeing IF it drains and WHERE it drains.

Again pictures would be helpful and most likely say you lots of time.
Had an Irwin 31 (1968) that looked very similar to the 27. It had cockpit 2 drains as you describe that exited near the rudder above the waterline. They were tubes w/no valves. On rare occasions w/the rail in the water, the leeward drain would back up a little bit in the cockpit to make the sole wet (but not too much standing water). The easy fix here was to add a piece of pvc tubes cut in a way to block the front of the hole, creating draw out of the drain hole (self draining). After installing them never had a problem again w/the water backing up the scupper.

Re: holes in hull by the rudder
In addition to best ideas above, if holes only, with no remaining fittings, consider that someone previously installed underwater lights - since removed.

Cockpit drain outlets or could have been for a self-steering wind vane system.

Greg,
The brochure for you boat can be found on this website. It has every brochure for any Irwin built. On page 5 (first bullet) of the brochure, they discussed "self bailing" cockpit drains aka drains above the waterline. These are probably the holes you are asking about.
If you want to find out factual info on Irwins and how they were built, etc., you need to talk to Gene Gammon ( here's the link to his contact). He worked w/ Ted Irwin and knows his stuff.

Posting photos from the inside and outside will solve this puzzle in a second.

It appears I didn't include the Irwin Yachts website in my original post so here it is: Irwin Yachts - Irwin Sailboats Parts & Manuals

Re: holes in hull by the rudder
As you have never owned a boat before, and because it’s sat for an extended time, and it’s an old boat, I’d strongly suggest you get a survey, just to know what your facing, before you splash it and it sinks due to a rotten hose or something.
You can most likely get a survey for a lot less money if you tell them your just after their opinion on everything and you don’t need a fancy written report.
Of course be there and take notes.
