Hlp! Packing Gland Beneteau 46 packing gland!

The dripless packing glad is dripping. Some clamps are rusted away from the throughhull. Can this be serviced with out pulling her out? Just had a haul out for bottom paint. I was stupid not to service then.
Thanks for all ideas!

I'm assuming you meant the stuffing box...? Or did you mean the stern gland...?

Here's a great article on Marine How-To about re-packing your stuffing box:

https://marinehowto.com/re-packing-a...-stuffing-box/

but he also has an article about the stern gland as well, if you search for it.

Good luck!

Where is it leaking?

What brand is it?

If it’s leaking from the area of the rusted clamps, why not just replace the clamps?

How about a picture? That’ll help identify the gland and the failure modes

i am guessing he is talking about a Vetus (or is it Volvo?) dripless seal, and yes, you can replace those, but you need to know what you are doing, or have someone who does. Think its Volvo.

Re: Hlp! Packing Gland Beneteau 46 packing gland!

I once had to replace one while the boat was in the water.

There was enough space aft of the prop to slip the shaft back far enough to remove the old one so I undid the coupling and slid the shaft back (seal still in place). I then dived overboard with a cotton T-shirt torn into strips which I wrapped tightly round the shaft where it entered the stern tube jamming them in tight with a screw driver. Then I wrapped strips of plastic bag and bandaged tightly again over that with inner tube strips.

When I removed the seal barely a drop came in (it was a damaged Deep Sea Seal "dripless" type that was leaking badly).

NOTE: This is not a recommendation only my experience

If you are describing a dripless stuffing box, there are several manufacturers. I am familiar with Strong Seal and Lasdrop. They have seals you have to change, there is no packing on these units.

I was told to keep an extra seal on the prop shaft so if one has to change the seal, it isn't necessary to disconnect the prop shaft from the transmission.
