HIN

Hi, Can anyone out there give me an example of a correct HIN for a 1973 Balboa swing keel sailboat. There is NO HIN on this boat and I have no idea what they want me to do about this...

Re: HIN

Lol, I'm not too sure, I figured I'd do some googling to see what I can find. What it looks like to me, is for the 20's and presumably your size as well, the HIN is just a numerical value attached to which hull, sequentially, yours was in construction. Example, if your boat was the 105th balboa 20 built your HIN might be something like 105? I'm by no means certain of this, I just thought it might jump start your search, I noticed you asked this question first over a year ago and still haven't gotten any where on it.

Re: HIN

HIN as noted is hull ID Number.

As I recall, first 3 is manufacture ID, next 2 Model number, next 3 hull number, next letter month built, next 3 year built and model year.

BEYN1100H203

For example, my Beneteau 393 is model N1, 100th one, built in August 2002, model year 2003.

The HIN should be on your coast guard documentation and/or state registration. It is on the boat, starboard near stern.

Hope this helps.

Re: HIN

This boat may have been built before HIN numbers were required, not sure of the actual date but I believe it was a bit later.

1972 according to my search, so a 1973 or 4 might have squeeked by.

Re: HIN

Yes, I did ask this a while back...Bought a 30 Irwin and now I wanna get this one down here too but this problem looms... I have the hull number-115, I have no idea if the first 3 digits for the manufacturer are for Lyle Hess...or Coastal Recreation, or Laguna Yachts who was the parent company...This is why I asked for someone with a Balboa to help me out...
There are NO numbers on the transom or anywhere on the boat. I can make a HIN and imbed it into the transom as per Balboa standards and I can register her to get her to Mexico where she will spend the rest of her (my ) years.
The Mnaufacturer has me stumped!
Example: _ _ _ (manufcturer) 00115 (hull number) 0473 (year built)
That is my hull number as per the bill of sale the guy gave me and I cannot get any results tracing this through the last registration which was 2006.
So, what do I put in for the manufacturer for the first 3 digits of the HIN?With this I am a happy camper
Thanks to you all for helping me search...this should be easy for us who want to do it right and cannot!

Re: HIN

Don't know what happens in your country but in Australia....
If the hull was manufactured before the HIN system, you go to a HIN provider and get a unique HIN for a small fee.

HIN providers are around at most ports and an official HIN plate is affixed to the stern as well as a hidden plate somewhere below. They forward the paperwork to whatever government department who cares and now the boat has a proper HIN forever.

Same thing is done if you build the hull yourself.

A broker should know where /if there is a HIN provider in your area.

Again, in Oz, it is illegal to "make up" a HIN from incomplete past data as the HIN is registered somewhere.

.

Unless your boat has an official number. At least in Victoria and South Australia they accepted our O.N. in place of a HIN which I suppose makes sense since the O.N. is carved into the deck beam under the mast. I wasted a bit of time running round trying to arrange a HiN installation when we bought the boat but thankfully discovered this little anomaly before I spent the nearly $1k it was going to cost to have a certified HIN installer visit the boat.

Re: HIN

Thanks for that but all I want is the Manufacturer's Identification Code for a Balboa sailboat. I'll be ok with that...

Re: HIN

it could be LEH. In any case, no-one is likely to tell you it is not

That is/was the code for Laguna Yachts, which was the owner of Arthur Marine/Coastal Recreation Inc.(USA), who may have built the boat.
