Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

Hi all,

I've recently bought my second boat, a herreshoff neriea designed steel cutter. She's an incredible sea boat as I'm discovering while bringing her from Adelaide (south Australia), through the southern ocean and bass strait to Sydney. I have a friend who has a herreshoff nereia also however his is a ketch. I can only find a few images of these yachts and non as a cutter. Does anyone out there own or neriea or at least a herreshoff?

Nicholas Baillie Jackson.

Ps how do I attach an image?

Hi
upload the image you want to attach to an online service or your own website or blog.
use the "insert image" tool and enter the url of the image you have uploaded.
Conversely, if the image is on an existing website, right click on the image and select copy image location url or similar wording, and again enter it into the image tool field.

A mate has another steel neria ketch here in hobart. My folk have a mobjack. Great seaboats. Very easy motion and fast of the wind.

Yeah right. My yacht was built in Hobart as well. In 1984. Does your friends ketch neriea have raked masts?

I would love to see a moby jack up close. Looks almost identical to the neriea just bigger.

Yep. They have all got heavily raked masts. Looks right on them. Very rakish! The neriea is similar to the mobjacks but deeper and heavier in proportion with a transom stern. There are three mobjacks down this way. My folks is the only gaff rigged one. There is also a wooden gaff rigged neriea down here that did some serious miles back in the day, around cape horn if I have the story right. For many years a neriea was my dream boat. Congratulations. Looking forward to seeing some pics of your neriea. Here is the mobjack with a bellyfull of wind and a bone in her teeth.

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

No way! I've never seen a gaff version. Mine doesn't have a raked mast but they look seriously cool. Yeah I couldn't be happier with this boat. Ticks all the boxes for me. I'm pretty sure it was built as a cutter and not a ketch. So hard to find something classic yet ocean capable for a decent price at the moment and I thought I was going to have to go to a more modern design after a few years of searching. The neriea is the perfect compromise for me. She was sailed solo around the world by the guy that built her (or maybe hard her built). I'll try and find out where it was built and by who once we get her to Sydney. The weather at the moment has been crazy so have been slowed down at jervis bay. I am writing up a lot of the legs on tumblr if care to see. Peaceandplentyyacht.tumblr.com

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

Hello I am happily owned by The LFH gaff schooner "Mary Harrigan"
design # 257 name of the first was "Joann" Now renamed "Brigadoon" 49'11" LOD 64ft LOA 25 ton disp.
built to the plans of timber..Plank on frame . Centerboard installed as per a letter to an interested party by LFH that I read in his file at Mystic seaport. launched 1985 .
Very pleased to say I went aboard that evening and still with her 29 years and many 1000's of seamiles on. A superb vessel . Now with a square rig makes her just about perfect. Most of the miles were/are with 2 total. A 3rd makes it just grand. get to sleep in .....
There are a few pictures on "Find a crew .net listing number 204232.
As I understand it This vessel was the first of the series of LFH's pilot boat hull model . Nereia, Mobjack Bounty,Tioga,Mistral and the Big one "Ticonderoga" origionaly named Tioga II. All in all just grand. :smitten Cheers to all

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

Hiyah, Couldn't resist chiming in as I owned a Mobjack from the day she was launched from our shop in '77. I cruised and lived aboard for 30 years, putting thousands of seamiles on her. Great comfortable boat. We lengthened her 3 feet and raised the sheer by 6 inches just for fun. It certainly made the interior bigger and gave her a few more inches on the waterline. Red cedar stripped on oak frames, everything else was teak. Now I have a 55 foot alloy monster.

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

I've sailed aboard a Halsey Herreshoff, a Nathaniel Herreshoff and an L. Francis Herreshoff designed boat. I think yours is L. Francis and looks very much like my old Garden ketch. The best performer was by Nathanial Herreshoff and an S-Class S Boat. Great sailor but small and cramped.

A big Herre in LP right now. They say one of two built in this size shape.

I think H28 are Herre too, right?

They are quite common to see but never seen one sailing anywhere. More like an object of someone's desire.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

H28 is an L. Francis Herreshoff designed boat. The Bristol 30 about the same size was designed by Halsey Herreshoff. Their designs are not the same.
To say that a boat is a Herreshoff design doesn't mean too much. They could be very different designs with very different sailing characteristics. Compare a 55 foot Marco Polo schooner 1979 Herreshoff Marco Polo sailboat for sale in with a Fishers Island 31 and it is very apparent.

Re: Herreshoff yachts? Anyone got one?

Yep, we have a Herreshoff "Caribbean 50". If I had a nickel for every time somebody said how pretty she is I'd be cruising already. She's a great sailor, very fast and comfortable. Here's some info on it, will post pics later.
The Concept

Garry Hoyt, an Olympic sailor and 1970 Sunfish World Champion, took a background of seventeen years sailing in the Caribbean to put together layout ideas for a cruising boat of maximum comfort. Not a cold water compromise, and not a half-assed ocean racer, but a full powered center cockpit ketch designed specifically for warm waters and trade winds.
The Designer

Halsey Herreshoff was asked to blend his knowledge of traditional sea kindly lines with the technology of modem fiberglass construction, to create a boat that pleased the eye while performing well on all points of sailing. Special considerations were maximum ventilation and ease of handling under sail and power.
The Builder

David Cheng is a master ship builder with over twenty-five years experience. Not to be confused with Hong Kong production houses, David’s shop is a small group of custom craftsmen who know how to make teak work with fiberglass and stainless steel. All fittings, rigging, and hardware are top grade U. S. A. manufacture and the overall construction quality of these boats is first-class .
