Help me chose my next boat :)

I am looking for my next boat, but my list of requirements takes me to a very unknown-to-me segment of the market. I am hoping that CF's knowledge can help me narrow down my search to specific models.

Basically, I am looking for a cruising sailboat 22' to 28'. I have a long list of requirements and wishes, but here is what I absolutely need:

1- Used and largely available in the US market for under $15000 (No obscure finnish sailboat produced to 30 hulls 20 years ago please)
2- folding mast, or at least, very easy to put up and remove without exterior help. I am not familiar with those at all and I don't know the systems available, but I know I want to be able to go under any bridge if I so desire, in less than 20 min.
3- daggerboard or centerboard with less than 2' draft when up.
4- maximum liveable space and interior headroom clearance for the size.

If anybody is curious, the purpose is for me and my wife to sail around the US (at least Canada to Texas, then maybe either finish the great loop or go down along Mexico's coast). We want the tiniest boat we can tolerate (we've had a 30' and a 32' and we know we need smaller), and we basically want a cheap little piece of fiberglass allowing us to go in shallow waters or up rivers without having to worry about manoeuvers, draft or clearance, or anything if it matters (the cheaper the boat, the less worried we will be about ruining it, it being stolen while we are exploring for days/weeks inland, etc.). Of course, I know it is all about compromises, so I am ready for a boat that will sail as well as a drifting piece of wood and I am not expecting to be safe in a storm (we would stay close to shore, and sail in fair weather only).

This is totally new to me as I used to be more the water sailing">blue water sailing kind, but I now want to see the world that my former 6' draft prevented me to ever discover until now. No more anchoring 200 feet away from shore.

Please list any model that comes to your mind, thank you for your help, and happy holidays to all !

Re: Help me chose my next boat :)

Hiya decca,

Big list of requirements, but clearly understood !
I think you'll find a fit...

I've got a 22 Chrysler sunpiper swing keel, sails great, despise the bilge, and spartan... 30 min to rig on land, would be leary of doing it splashed...

Also a 19 West Wight Potter... It would be perfect for you if it were... Well... much bigger... Spectacular layout and amenities for 19ft... Vee+2 qtr berth, sink, stove, porta... 10 min to rig...

Next up, a very long list copied from another website...

Happy, how did you generate that list? Pretty cool. Price is probably not a parameter but it's great information.

No headroom apart from under the pop-top, but a used F27 folding tri will both do the job and make you fall even further in love with sailing, which you never before realised could be quite so easy and quite as much fun...

I met a couple once where he sailed the boat and she drove the car, they met at the next location. Always thought this was a good idea, gives you a lot of options. Good luck.

Standing headroom for a small trailerable boat is the hard part. You could go with one of the pilot house Nimbles but tough to find with that budget. The Nimbles also have a good tabernacle system. Seawards are nice but also pricy. What's the max weight for your tow vehicle?

Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20 in the outboard model.
Look on Boats for Sale - New and Used Boats and Yachts - YachtWorld.com we have two listed. Both under 20K asking.
You can't beat the quality for the price and they have stand up headroom. You will not be able to easily lower any mast on any substantial ocean going boat but you can jury rig a boom pole to do it on this boat.
Just my two cents.

Re: Help me chose my next boat :)

Our Seaward 25 almost fits the bill and I highly recommend them. Having said that, the boat that jumps out at me with this criteria is the MacGregor. Cheap, roomy, easy to raise and lower the mast, variable draft, tons of them out there, etc. The older S and D models are fine sailing boats. The newer X and M models, with their bigger outboards, give you some other exploring options.

I know many people poo poo the Macs but, having spent a lot of time around all kind of trailerable sailboats, I think they really get a bad rap.

Disqualified by draft. Great boat though.

It looks like the newer power-sailor models have really shot up in price lately.

We've also been thinking about getting a smaller trailerable sailboat & the Seaward is one of my favorites. Why do you say it almost fits the bill & what do you think of the boat?
