Re: Help finding the right one

I think there is a Cape Dory 30 for sale near in BC right now... will take you anywhere.

Bluewaterboats.org also has a number of good possibilities, but really I'd say look locally for a boat in good shape, in your price range and with the headroom, performance and stowage capacity you need. If you come upon one that looks good, let us know and I bet someone here will know a lot about it, and will be able to advise you on things to consider before purchase.

This social group may have some threads of interest to you too, as far as preparing for coming down the coast before going across, or going more directly from the PNW to Hawaii.

My size choice is driven about equally by ease of handling and budget, but limited by only one of those. I also just don't see myself needing a larger boat, especially if I would be doing the long crossings solo. I'm mostly happy sharing my 27 with one other person, save for the headroom issue.

One thing I unfortunately forgot to mention in my original post is that resellability is important to me. I may have just made up a word, but I'd like to have the option of selling the boat relatively easily and with minimal loss. I doubt it will be the case, but what if after my test crossing I realize that ocean cruising is not for me!

Re: Help finding the right one

Don't be afraid of Columbia boats. My 9.6 was a bargain and I don't think I'd have to change much to be willing to cross oceans with it. (Windvane, desalination, solar). I might swap standing rigging with dynema. Solid spray hood rather than my fabric dodger.

Take a look at Vancouver 27s/28s too.
