headroom and draft

Need Input: Planning to move up in size. I am 6-2" and need headroom. Also, would like to be able to do ICW and Bahamas, so draft is also a big consideration. Please tell me what make of boat you inhabit, it's headroom and draft. Just trying to pre-determine what warrants a trip to look at vs. the totally impracticle. Thanks in advance.

Re: headroom and draft

You really don't give enough information regarding what you are intending to move up to...

We used to have an Island Packet 40...Great boat...The designer Bob Johnson is tall so all the IPs are too.

We are now on a Tayana 48 -- NOMAD. When we started looking for the next boat (this boat) I did not know headroom would strike some boats from my 'list'. But sure enough even some BIG boats didn't have 6'3" headroom. We ended up on this one and have loved it. It is a Perry design...which should speaks volumes for the performance.

When we bought her in 2013 we completed a refit which included replacing the rig with a new internal car mast and full batten main that was built to 62.5'AWL. It had a roller furling main that was 64'+ tall. As a sidebar -- not all the bridges that are marked "65 AWL", are. Some are sinking and 64' is about it. There are places on the ICW we enjoy going inside sometimes and there are good reasons to be able to use the ICW to travel when things are not conducive off shore.

By changing to a full batten main, we added about 20% to the main sail area and did not reduce the jib size at all. So I am still sailing in 10-12 knts of air at 6-7 knts true. I am thrilled with that performance on a fully loaded, big cruising boat.

We did many other upgrades at that time...As far as draft...this boat is 6'. We have traveled extensively through the ICW and Bahamas. I wouldn't want anything deeper that 6', but that said, there is no place I want to go that I can't go. I just have to watch the tides. Being aware of the tides is something every prudent mariner should adhere to anyway.

I hope this addresses your questions about mast height and draft. They are important. I travel offshore when the conditions are good but am able to travel inside when it sucks outside. There are many beautiful places to go that tall rigged, deep draft boats can't get to.

Due to health issues that have come up in the last year (my wife is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes now), we are selling NOMAD.

Nomad is a great boat for anyone looking for a larger monohull that is literally capable of going "anywhere"...well almost anywhere.

PM if you want more information and check the classified section.

Regards
David Rock

Re: headroom and draft

By the way, we would consider taking a trade of some sort on NOMAD.

Re: headroom and draft

Our Bristol 29.9 has 4 foot 4 inch draft, I am 6'4" tall and I can all but stand up straight, under the main hatch & companion way I can stand up fully.
I don't know what size boat you want or dollars you want to spend, but the 29.9 has a lot of storage and good bunk lengths, and is a fine boat to do what you are wanting.

Happy hunting 😊

Re: headroom and draft

I've got a V27 with 4'3" draft and 6'1" headroom. I'm 6'1" so if I stand up straight the headliner acts as one giant grab rail for my whole body .. I can hold on without strapping in and still have two hands free for cooking! Ta da!

D Rock's comments about bahamas and ICW are spot on.

Would only add the occasional anchorage where one casts wistful glances at catamarans in one to two feet.
