I spent my time as a moderator quite a few years ago. I did enjoy it; however, it took me some time to adapt to understanding all the variance in personalities and behaviors. It's so much easier to speak face to face with someone make a case for knowing them and their intentions.

I recall being surprised by a post from Boatman years ago back when I was a novice moderator. Unaware of his caustic humor and wit that accompanies his wise advice. I had misinterpreted his post as a rude attack. I sometimes think back of this as a lesson in moderating that requires learning the community and understanding the diversity across the international base. Thanks for my training, Boatie!

It is a difficult task and so much easier just to pop in and submit an occasional post. I also admire those that continue with this moderating.

Most anyone that has been here long enough has run afoul of the moderators at one time or another...myself included...they show little favoritism...at the time, I thought that the mods were being a tad picky, but now with the advantage of time and experience here, I can look back and see that their pickyness was justified and I was rightfully taken to task.

I don't know what sets a moderator apart from the general CF contributors. I see a lot of names here and over and over again, and generally speaking, conversations stay more or less on topic, but do sometimes take on a life of their own and start wandering on an uncharted course.

Being a mod must be much like herding sheep...an unenviable task requiring more than a fair share of patience.

I'm fairly sure that the mods undergo a careful scrutiny process. Knowledge must be interwoven with good people skills. They should apply for political office and we should vote them in, as careful scrutiny apparently does not apply to the modern day politician.

Ok, enuff praise for the mods...

As someone who's lurked often and posted occasionally over the past we're not even going to think about how manyyears, I absolutely agree with the prevailing sentiment. Hats off to the moderators, who seem to have the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon, among many other skills.

Spending time on some other forums, both sailing-related and not, CF is by far one of the best I frequent on the moderation front.

I'll be happy to chip in to the "buy the moderators a drink of their choice" fund... and if I ever find myself in the same locale as any of you, the first round is on me. And I don't expect any favoritism for it -- but a heads up on that great non-project-boat being posted for cheap by someone who really wants her to go to a new home won't go amiss!

Anyone complaining too much is pressganged when least expecting it, into mod training boot camp. Basic military training is easier, quicker and less painful.
