Hanging hammocks

Is it safe to hang a hammock from a backstay to the mast, or from a shroud to the forestay/furled genoa?

Re: Hanging hammocks

How good are you at knots? The mast and rigging shouldn’t be a problem. If they ARE a problem, you have a problem. If you set it up going from a shroud to the forestay be careful not to get out of the hammock on the wrong side and end up in the water.

Re: Hanging hammocks

I have always hung a hammock between my forestay and the mast. Used it to relax while trimming the spinnaker in light air, and to sleep at night when the weather permitted. C&C 35 MKI.

Re: Hanging hammocks

Your stays and mast can bear tremendous loads. So, there's no problem in that sense hanging a hammock. Perhaps a little thought should be given how you hang the hammock if you're tying one end to a furled headsail. To prevent slippage, you might want to use several rounds before knotting it off. Else, provide some material to avoid chafing the sail.

Re: Hanging hammocks

It would depend on the size of the boat--bigger boat therefore stronger rigging and mast.

Lateral forces on a taut shroud generates a much larger load on the shroud than the what the lateral force is. And unless there is a big sag in the hammock, the load generated would be a lot greater that the weight in the hammock.

Also, need to be careful about the point load on the shroud/stay. Maybe spread the load on the shroud/stay with a bridle.

I know I haven't answered your question. Probably OK, but I wouldn't do it on a smaller boat.
