Re: Hairline hull fractures Opinions please

Hello All:
By way of update.
I spoke and emailed with surveyor. I think he was being overly cautious. His opinion is that there is no compromise to the hull and this is more likely gel coat crazing but he couldn’t verify internally. I also received more info on size, location and more detailed photos. I then took these to a local surveyor / architect and his opinion was superficial cracking for any number of reasons; stand placement, overly thick gel coat application initially, natural flexing along grid lines... the boat hull is solid fibreglass, no core, so very unlikely any structural issues.
I thank all for input. For some if I wasn’t clear this was on the underwater area of the hull. Going ahead with the purchase.
Best regards to all.

Gel coat cracks are very common. Unless you can find internal hull damage they are nothing to be worried about. Simple as that.

I believe that a of July 2 you can go to the USA and not have to quarantine on the return if you have had both shots and proof of negative test. So I would go to the boat. Otherwise you are always going to worry about others taking shortcuts on the repair. I am not sure you can drive across the border but for sure you can fly.

Most of the gelcoat cracking I have seen has been on decks and near winches. Never saw it there, where the OP's is. The misplaces props could cause it, but without having a look-see underneath, there's no way to tell what (if anything) happened to the layup.

Gelcoat cracking like this is very common on boats with flat hull sides above the waterline forward. When this type of boat pounds to weather the flat hull sections are impacted by the waves (since the boat is heeled over) and flex.

Some earlier Whitbread boats basically self destructed with this type of flexing, crews had to put internal braces against the opposite side of the boat to keep the hull from maximum flexing.

More longitudinal stringers are needed to reduce the flex.

In OP's case it is apparently below the waterline and likely to be caused by something else.

Yes, Jim's Yankee 30 had a little oil-canning from pounding to windward. He fixed it according to instructions by S&S.

I still think this Beneteau's hairline cracks there are in a weird place. But I am open to being convinced otherwise.

My personal view FWIW is never buy a boat at a distance. Surveyors are a mixed bag and unless you know them personally and know their strengths and weaknesses, often get things wrong or miss things altogether. I am a practical person and more importantly have a vested interest in whatever boat I am buying, so looking over the boat myself is essential and will (may) then get a surveyor to do the things I cannot or am not qualified to make an assessment of.
