First post here. I'm buying a 31' Allmand under 10k and will appreciate any insight regarding these vessels as this will be my first purchase. Plan is to change lifestyle and explore Florida in relative comfort. Thoughts on how the community regards these vessels, also gratefully appreciated.

Re: greenhorn

Good Day Captain,
Bought the boat, living aboard now for about two weeks and very content with both boat and a community of very friendly, knowledgeable neighbors. Wanted to present a scenario for anyone with some time and insight...here goes: My battery selector switch offers "1", "2", and "Both". The switch is on "Both" and the solar panels take several daylight hours to replace the current depleted overnight, leaving me essentially dead in the water daily until I get the 11.8 volts needed to crank the engine. My question is; "how can I understand which switch is for the house bank of batteries, and which switch goes to the starting battery located next to the engine, so that I may select the house bank, thus leaving my starting battery to it's original purpose?" The batteries average holding has been between 12.0-12.5 volts, when I start the engine they charge to 13.5 volts. The goal is to use the starting battery just for starting the boat. Appreciate your time, please forward any insight or questions at your convenience. Be well.

You will have to physically trace out the wiring if the PO didn't mark the battery leads. Plus you could always disconnect the wiring and ohm it out with a meter

Re: greenhorn

Pardon if I'm missing something, but have you tried just putting it on "1", and seeing what works, and then doing the same with "2"?

This would be the easiest way to get a general idea.

Whichever one is the engine, use for only the engine.

How old are the batteries? They could be due for replacement, if only for peace of mind. A voltmeter would be a great investment, in case something has been rewired.
