Good Center Cockpit Boats Under 40' ?

Problem with small CC boats is the saloon is tiny. In reality, how much time do you spend in the aft nookietorium? The problem is compounded by the lack of on deck stowage.

I'm leaving for an Atlantic circuit this month on my Oyster Heritage. Good Holman & Pye design from the mid 80s. So solid layup, but a modern ergonomic cockpit. Medium/heavy displacement at 8.5 tons, so a good weight carrier, plus she was affordable.


There's a couple for sale on Yachtworld at the moment. A seriously ugly and expensive deck saloon version, a very old one and another which I suspect is is an executor's sale.

8 hours a day in port. 10 on Sundays if I can afford it.

Have just been going through this recent post, I am at present considering both the Amel Sharki and Whitby 42, very different boats, but I believe, both well built and with their respective "fan clubs" Any comments, guidance any of you may have wrt short handed handling etc, would be apprecitaed.

I don't know the Whitby 42, but having recently bought a 1983 Amel Sharki with a sugar scoop making her a 42 as well, I am soooooooo happy with my purchase, a yacht designed so well with a centre cockpit know to be one of the safest designs. Fell free to email me.

My last boat was the C&C 39' Landfall. I loved that boat, singled handed it all the time. Good sailing boat even with old sails it was still fast. As for a liveaboard, storage on deck very limited, below deck had a lot of storage for a 39'. With a 5' 6" draft and a mast height of 50' it was perfect for the intercoastal and Bahamas. Are you kidding? I sail my HR 40 single-handed all the time. Two steps to the mid-ships cleat, one step to aft cleat, closer to bow than an aft cockpit, easier to get in and out of cockpit than an aft cockpit. Good views and easier reach for everything.

I sailed a lot of boats before buying Auspicious and was surprised (against my prejudices) to keep coming back to a center cockpit.

Why the heck do you think a single hander wouldn't be perfectly happy with a center cockpit boat?

i think it has to do that you aren't at the stern to be able to loop a line around a piling when approaching a dock etc

There is one for sale in Victoria Canada in great shape for 80K CDN , Owners are too old to sail any more.

Let's open up the threads suggestions to aft cockpits with aft staterooms as well.

I also REALLY like the Pearson 422, but since they are relatively scarce, they tend to be more expensive than the aft cockpit/aft stateroom version of the same boat (the 424). And the 424's have a pretty cool dual companionway arrangement such that the aft cabin and main cabin can be accessed independently.
