My submission -

Catalina 425 (43' 6'' loa - Approx 23,000 lb displacement.) Strong, Molded FG grid glassed to hull in the mold. Water tight crash bulkhead forward. Twin helms, single rudder w sacrificial (bottom 1/3rd) in case of hitting obstruction. Rig is stout, Seldon furling main, self tacking jib. Interior is attractive, conservative teak w numerous handholds throughout cabin. I've had her offshore for 16 days - found her to be trust worthy and reasonably comfortable.

I have only run across two of these for sale, but they seem to be a great evolution from a “classic” builder. Kind of wonder why I don’t see more?

I REALLY like that boat. If only it was 38-40 feet and not 44. Great interior layout for a liveaboard solo/couple, pilothouse, and lots of recent work.

And it has everything I hate. Heavy displacement, full keel double ender. WTF? It will sail like a brick.

Who would buy this when you could buy a super maramu of same vintage for less?
Its ridiculous.
And super maramu are overpriced by 50,000 thanks to delos

I do like Super Maramus, but a Super Maramu is 53 feet, so its 10 feet longer and a SM doesn't have a pilothouse. If you want a 43 foot boat with a pilothouse then a SM would be a bad choice... LOL

My Goldilocks 45 foot boat would be a Boreal 44. For me, it is basically perfect. Buy this and call it a day.

I’ve always thought the Wauquiez line were good Goldie locks boats. Well built, reasonably fast, comfortable.

It rather seems as though the "Goldilocks" boat should have:
The speed, response, and agility of a sports car, and the cargo carrying ability of a truck, and the strength of an Abrams tank.
I'm kind of in three spaces:
"Plastic Classic"= Alajuela 38.
"Older School" = S&S Swan.
"Ancient School" = Alden schooner.
They all tug at my heart strings.
A lot of "modern" boats are nice/ok, but why do so many of them look like they were designed inside and out by an inferior desecrator, (interior designer,) or a toy designer.
Heaven forbid that a hose or wire might offend someone with its visual presence.

I love those S&S swans dearly, and they sail upwind very very well.....but....downwind not so much. They are still better than 99% if the suggestions on here in that they are a sailing boat, not a boat shaped object like all those heavy displacement full keel double ender's where you plan your ETA to the nearest Mont...

There’s no such thing as a Goldilocks boat. Far too much is in the eye of the beholder.

My advice , don’t fixate on particular design features , until you have sailed a cross section of boats from modern designs to older stuff. Newbies get hung up on keel, rudder , interior , old new aesthetics, without any practical experience of what they are talking about.

Today almost anything from 40 feet up will do typical leisure oceanic crossings if you want to. You will give up long before the boat will.

Only sweat the details , when you have practical comparative data, because up to that point it’s just a unsubstantiated comparative opinion
