Garmin Touch Screen 7012

Hello fellow sailors:

Has anyone installed the new Garmin 7012 touch screen chart plotter at the helm. I am toying with ripping out my complete Raymarine system and upgrading to a Garmin touch screen. I only sail my 49 in the Chesapeake Bay, so I am not concerned about rough seas interfering with my ability to find the correct button on my plotter.

I would love some input!

We put a Garmin 7012 at the helm last winter. I had fears about how well the touch screen would work "in weather", etc. I used the thing all this season without a hitch. Mine is mounted at the helm, on the pedestal, and is not protected (other than the protection from it's mounting 'pod'). I absolutely loved it. All my cruising was mid coast Maine, but weather was a bit of everything...the Garmin never gave me any cause for 'buyers remorse'. My reaction was more 'that is the best money I've spontaneous on the boat for a long time". Good luck. I think you'll love it.

BTW, I love my Garmin 5208.
The only glitch I've had is when it's raining cats and dogs, sometimes the screen gets a little cranky.

There was a thread on here not too long ago that said that water droplets sometimes interfered with the ability to use the touch screen capability properly ... that's why I bought a Garmin 4210 .... However, I don't have any personal experience that says that the touch screens are a problem. (Incidently, I love my 4210.)

We have the 5208 tutch screen and on our cat it's located just inside a window at the helm that opens in good weather and between the hard dodger and the window it really gets no weather except wind. I love the 3D charts especially in narrows between islands and almost visiable rocks in the middle of an anchorage.

Some folks have indicated that they prefer the non-touch version of these much more - due to the above problems and fingerprints on the screen. We have 2 good friends who bought the non-touch versions and love them.
