Yep, idle time and a lot to figure out, so pretty much day dreaming at the moment.

Actually, you really don't need a new one.

I paid $2,000 for my Bristol 27 in 2011, and it's as tough as they come.

Check out the total beast of a keel it has.
This was very helpful; I agree with you. And the photos are pretty much sailboat porn - so cool!? TY for sharing. Good looking boat!

So how much you spend is entirely up to you.

It seems some folks though want to spend lots of money on a boat when you actually don't need to at all.

The same goes for your electronics/instruments if you have some basic computer skills. See link below.

This was quite helpful advice. I'll check the links. Actually, I'm pretty good at fixing / building computers and such. But fixing diesel engines - Lots to learn on my end. I'll get there. Anyhow, I've started to think, in the end, I might end up spending only a fraction of what I had been planning to pay. We'll see...

Many who buy older full keel boats these days less than 30' in length will many times install a new outboard rather than trust a smelly old diesel.

I have mine on a bracket and it's a Mercury 5 hp 4 stroke 25 " extra long shaft and is about as efficient as a diesel engine. I bought it new in 2011.

So when it comes time for you to get a chart plotter you can build you own for about $100 if you already have a Monitor.

Just get a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 computer and load it with OpenCPN. Then get a USB GPS puck and you will have a chart plotter.

Or you can spend $1500 for one. It's totally up to you and what you enjoy doing......or not doing.

I know it is not very reasonable, but I'm planning to pay extra few thousands and go with a new small diesel, something less than 10hp...

Well you will have better range for motoring with a 20 gallon or so tank.

I just don't want that much gas on my boat for the outboard.

My boat did have a 10 hp Bukh diesel though. (starter panel is still mounted) Performance was about the same as my 5 hp outboard but the diesel was ancient..... a 1974 that had been on several long cruises the last one being from Massachusetts to Florida/Bahamas and almost back with the PO.

You can also use your laptop with Windows if you have one to try out OpenCPN and use the same GPS USB Puck.

https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/info/downloadopencpn.html

I did this at home first using my laptop then used it on the boat as my chart plotter and later set up the Raspberry Pi which can be a bit more complicated since the OS is Linux.

My GPS Puck Receiver is something like this one.

RPi 4

Re: Full Keel Sailboats

One thing I did forget to mention though was that I replaced my 10 hp 352 lb Bukh Diesel with a 58 lb outboard.

I may get a spare when I start cruising full time and possibly carry extra gas in a 5 gallon container on the bow tied down.

But not much more than that.

Here sailing within 100 miles of my marina I usually have 2-4 gallons of gas onboard in separate containers.

I'm super biased, but I love my Hans Christian 33. Regarding full-keeled boats, I've owned an Island Packet 35, a Mason 44 and now this HC33. They were all good boats, but the HC is my favorite of the three.
