Well, I did not take into account that people would think I was siphoning gasoline into a cruising boats integral tank. So yes, Gas should not be stored inside.

For a transatlantic trip on board an Ohlson 38 we lashed two five-gallon plastic jerrycans in the cockpit footwell. This reduced the volume of the cockpit if we took a sea aboard. It also put them where they couldn't be swept overboard and kept their weight lower in the boat. A board across the cockpit over them made for additional seating.
