Frozen Seacock Advice

So I have a few of the older bronze style seacocks that are all frozen. They look like this:

Hope I did that correctly ^^

Anyway, I tried a little muscle, penetrating oil, and some light to moderate banging with a rubber mallet. All very good suggestions I snagged from other posts here on the forums. None of these worked.

I got some advice from my local marine store to use a pulley puller. After a little reluctancy I removed the nuts/washers, applied a little pressure to the pulley puller and BAM, the seacock came free. WOOHOO!

I used some lapping compound and some sandpaper and cleaned the valve and parts all up and used some white lithium grease to reassemble the seacock.

Here is the question/issues (btw boat is on the hard)
1.) What are the chances that these will leak?
2.) The valve is held in place with a washer and two nuts. The first nut is the tension nut, the second is a lock nut. How tight is too tight for the first nut? If I tighten it all the way down the valve doesn't turn at all.

Any constructive suggestions/comments are helpful and appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Frozen Seacock Advice

Looks like an old Wilcox Crittenden seacock. Sounds like you did a good job cleaning it up. Just tighten the nut so that it takes a little effort to move the handle. When you get back in the water, check it for drips and tighten as needed.

Replace that hose while you’re at it. It’s not meant to be used below the waterline and it’s looking old.

Adjust the tension nut when the boat is in the water. Tighten until it doesn't leak.

All good advice, good quality valves. Also, remove the square headed plug....(probably 1/8" NPT thread)..install a grease nipple and grease while moving the hanle between open/close. Remove grease nipple and replace the threaded plug. Cycle all the vales monthly.

Re: Frozen Seacock Advice

While on the hard I would take a moment to made sure the internals of the seacock are still there. I just removed an old original from my boat...there was nothing inside remaining. Mine was a 50 yr old valve that had served it's time.
