Re: From Sarasota to Havana

Guys, I have never sail Caribbean before. And I really care this "hurricane season". But I don't want spent my time for waiting till November.
Nobody sails from Florida to the South in this months? How to organize trip to Havana best of all? May be it is possible to find a weather window for 3-4 days and start?

Re: From Sarasota to Havana

Wait for the end of a cold front and make a direct jump to KW. You can anchor there for months if need be and wait for your weather window to cross. KW is no more dangerous in hurricane season than Sarasota is.

If you're really keen on weather advice, get a weather routing contract. I'm sure people here can recommend one. You tell them where you want to go and they give you advice (they are meteorologists).

BTW the Naples Municipal Marina is reasonably priced, but transients are limited to 4 days during each month.

Re: From Sarasota to Havana

Sarasota may be the safest place in Florida during hurricane season. It's got this weird done of protection around it. In the decades I lived in Florida (Miami area and the Sarasota) hurricanes that pointed at Sarasota seemed to always get pushed north or south at the last minute.

I love captain jacks. Love the way the dining room is arranged like an arena with the marina being the view.

I used to spend time at cafe Kaldi in years past. I wonder if it's still there.

Anyway I think the OP is a troll or bait so...

Yep, lived there 6 years. We thought Charlie was going to do us in, but the strange cone did its job. But in reality, it's not safer . . . . Try Sarasota Sailing Squadron for good and reasonable dockage.

Re: From Sarasota to Havana

Yeah I was there for Charlie...Ivan and what was the third one that year?

I was in Miami during Andrew....holy Christmas....you have no idea!!!! Unless you were there, no one can have a clue what it was like, during AND aftermath.

I can still see the blown out Bank of America building in my mind's eye, the cars on roofs and ocean fish the wind picked up and dropped 10 miles inland.

Where in Sarasota did you live? I lived just south of fruitville off "Trimble" or something like that.

Re: From Sarasota to Havana

Two places, just north of fruit like on 4th in Gillespie Park, right downtown, then Arlington Park. Sailed a Pearson 28 at the squadron. Great times. Glad I haven't weathered anything like Andrew. Floyd was worst, when I lived in Beaufort NC. Nothing like Andrew though. Now we're in Maine, where we might get blizzards but hurricanes aren't too much if a worry! Short but amazing sailing season.

Well, we've hijacked this thread pretty well!

From Sarasota to Havana

Oh Tuttle, that's was the name of the ave....

I lived by gallespie park as well for a while, on 8th, 7th and 10th st. Obviously at different times. I never ever saw a cop at the police substation there, for years.

I am trying to remember where Arlington park is...
